Hey hermanites!

After watching a few of Scott's recent training videos, i decided to start hitting my traps more. When i came to do the upright barbell row, i got a horrible popping feeling in my wrists when i hit the top of the motion, making it unbearable to do. I tried with a straight bar, and an EZ curl, even with really light weights. I kept my elbows above my wrists and studied scotts form like crazy.

Anyone else suffer from this? or anyone know how i could prevent this?

#HTH!

@graay94, think you can upload a video of your form so I can see what is going on?

Simple solution, switch it for cable rope upright rows. Your wrist issues will go away. If it still bothers you ( you should visit a doctor) you can do the cable rope face pull with external rotation. This shouldnt bother your wrists at all, and it hits the traps nicely.

You already check the form with Scott video? I guess its much better if you will provide a video as what captain scott said to see your form. Mostly we feel something because of the incorrect form or pposition. Is that your first time to hit your traps? try to do wrists stretching before hitting traps, somehow it will help for your flexibility in that area.

You can try these alternatives.. much easier for you.

Now the pain keep on going.. as Kostas said visit your doctor.

Kostas has already covered this one but I'll just add that you need to spread your hands further apart so that when you lift the bar up your wrists stay perfectly neutral and do not deviate.

Yea turn it into a wide grip upright row, which will emphasize more of the lateral head of the shoulder and less traps. But its still a pretty good trap builder. And since we got into this topic, dumbell lateral raises are pretty similar with a wide grip upright row, so you can try them too.

yeah i could try to get a video uploaded soon! my workout partner watched me doing the excersize and didnt really see anything wrong, and could perform the excersize with no issues!

ive never had any other wrist issues at all, and it was more of a joint pain than muscle pain!

When doing upright rows or any exercise for the upper body as far as that goes, its very important to keep your wrist straight and dont let them bend. If you let them bend, the amount of weight you are lifting is going to put an excessive amount of pressure on the wrist joint. Personally when I do upright rows I like to keep my wrists as straight as possible, but I instead of putting a solid hand grip on the bar I just hook my fingers to it instead. I feel by doing it this way it takes pressure off the wrists, forearms, and biceps and emphasizes the traps more.

These guys gave great suggestions. I would try and do cable upright rows or dumbbell but if neither of those work, face pulls and shrugs will also do the trick to help those traps grow

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but find your nearest tricep's pull-down rope attachement and start using it in reverse.

What you want to do is treat the movement as a face-pull exercise, except you will be pulling from a low-pulley position up towards your head/face thereby engaging the delts and traps.

Hope that helps!
