hi scott , today i was just totally pumped up , i wanted today to be a chest day so i went out today to the park and they have those machines that you sit on you do you incline chest press, which supposely you are lifting your own body weight, so i t did 5 sets of 15 reps, for my chest. then i went home  and started doing push ups with the push up bars, with that i did 5x5, but when i got up after doing the push ups i am now in alot of pain from neck...if i try to look up i get this intense pain, i should also mention that when using the push up bars i had them facing up and down like in the hammer curl postion ( ! ! )  and not side to side ( -  - )... so when i did them the up and down postion i still bent my elbows like i was doing the side to side pushup, i think i should have left my elbows tucked in to the side of my body and not flaring out, Scott can please help me with some advice like in what i might be doing wrong and what i could do to help ease the pain??

p.s , i also wanted to thank you Scott because even though im in pain, i actually did my first real push up , in fact i did the whole 5x5 , something i have never ever done in my life. you truly do change lives Scott :) thank you.

Hey @Fox84!

That is great progress you are making with your push-ups! Keep up the great work man!

Your question..next time you should post something like this, about an injury, in the injury recovery and prevention forum. That way more people will see your post :)

If you have neck pain, were you using your body to perform the push-ups, or were you kind of pushing your face towards the ground?, if that makes sense. You're right about your elbows - try and keep them tucked in instead of flaring out. There is nothing wrong with doing push-ups with bars in either position you mentioned.

Have you ever had this kind of neck pain before?

Anyway, I'd ask if you could upload a video of your push-ups once your pain goes away then we can see if there is anything seriously wrong with your form.

Hope this helps! #HTH

thanks jordon  for taking the time to look in to this , and your right i should have posted it into the injury forum, im just in alot of pain was not really patient as to where to post it, but yea you make sense, i later corrected my form on the last set when i saw a video of scott doing the pushups with the pushup bars,i but i believe i messed up the first four sets, but i had to finish my set..as for the neck pain i have not had that pain before, lol so right now im not used to it , i feel like really stiff, if i have to move my neck to look in another direction, then i have to move my whole body, not just my neck,  the pain is traveling from the bqck of my neck to the right shoudler and right shoulder blade. its more of a really bad sore feeling and tightening type of feel. but yea when i get better i will upload a video , also where do i go to post someting like if i want to vent out, nothing bad like bad words or stuff, just things like when someone puts you down, i had written another post under genenral discussions under whats motivates you, and it was just an issue that i had when my uncle came down, so i just typed how i felt. ..well thanks again and take care jordan.

If you want to vent, using the general discussion forum would be best.

And yeah man, a video will make it easier to see what, if anything, you are doing wrong.

Glad I could help! You take care too!

Hey my question is how do you know what your body fat percentage is?

There are several ways to measure this, though only two are practical for the average person. One is using calipers to administer a skin-fold test, where you take measurements and follow some directions to put it all together. The second and most common method is bioelectrical impedance analysis, where a hand held machine or a scale is used to measure the balance of water in your body (muscle has high water content and his highly conductive through electrical impulses, fat is the opposite). These hand-held machines are fairly cheap. To get the most accurate measure, lab tests are used. The names of the procedures are a Dexa Scan and Hydrostatic Weighing, if you are interested.

In summary, to get an estimate of your BF% you could purchase calipers or a bioelectrical impedance device. In reality, these numbers are fairly useless unless you have a good reason for obtaining them. You would have better results relying on your mirror and disregarding the numbers in my opinion.

I hope that helps.

Hey my question is how do you know what your body fat percentage is?

There are a few different ways @Christian809.

You can get some calipers and do skin folds, you can buy scales which supposedly give you an idea of fat percentage, or you can just guesstimate by comparing yourself with something like this: [Google Search Result]

The best way to actually get a super spot on percentage is to do hydrostatic testing...but that is expensive and inconvenient :)

Hey Terrance, I just realized that my response to your post was blank.  Not sure why :/

Can you give me a macro breakdown of your daily food.

Also, what did your doctor say after you recovered from the stomach swelling?  Were there any conditions?

I didn't see @Scott_Herman answer. But I expected the same he said exactly.

What's up @Fox84

Bro, to get over any kind of neck muscles pain you have to focus on these points:

Applying ice or cold packs.

The cold helps reduce inflammation in the area, which in turn allows it to heal. The ice or cold pack should be applied in twenty-minute intervals during the day randomly.

Applying heat. The heat helps bring nutrient-rich blood flow to the area to stimulate a healing response. You can do that by a hot shower with direct warm water to the injured part.

Medications. Gels and creams will reduce the inflammation, which in turn will help reduce the pain. And I am not talking about pain killers.

Last and the best step is:

Massage. A gentle massage will to stimulate blood flow in the area, which helps it heal faster and make you feel better.

Hope this helped you.

Hi Scott and Erica,

I've been watching your videos on youtube for the past one and a half year. I must admit that I really enjoy watching them and also using them in my workout routines. I can see that it has toned me in many ways and my stamina is slowly building.

I'm from Malaysia and I work in the theatre. I actually would like to seek your advise. I'm actually interested in personal training and helping people like you two. I also go to gym in Malaysia and see how some people lift weights wrongly and it's actually bad for their posture. Hence, I'm really interested in helping my actor to grow with their body and do so much more with their body. I was wondering if you train personal trainers through online too.

Any advise would be great. (I couldn't find any good Personal Training Course in Malaysia)

Thank you very much.

Joyce.

HI guys and gals, i just have a question i needed help with, recently i was looking in the mirror and checking myself out to see my progress, and i have just noticed i have bruising on my right pec, on the top right of my right pec, and when i lift up my right arm i see i have another bruise on the top left of my right armpit, so the bruises are about 3inches from each other from the pec to my arm pit, i could do some push ups without anypain, but as i have mentioned before in the past , my right arm or shoulder pops alot when i do something like over head dumbbell press or the arnold dumbbell press, is this normal for me or as far as the bruising goes, like is it normal to get bruises from doing pushups and lifting dumbbells, thanks
