Hey all! For a while now ive been working on reducing my bodyfat, while obviously still making some killer gains! My question/topic for discussion is: What does everyone prefer mixing their protein shakes with?
Milk obviously has the extra protein, calcium, and whatnot advantage, but at the same time milk can also be quite fatty!
Then on the other hand water is better for the fat side, but has no protein value, and a few people i know who are doctors have reccomended using water as a high milk diet can lead to kidney stones.

Whats your views and opinions?

-Also i must again praise Scott Herman and the Hermanites, as I would have never have found BSN supplements without you all, and its by far my favourite protein and preworkout sups ever! The protein mixability, even with water is amazing! Many ive sampled dont fully mix and you end up chewing what feels like sand! #HTH!

It depends on the flavor of protein. I personally have a caloric intake of around 2700 on rest days and 3100-3200 on workout days. Which means I do not mind a little extra calories from milk. Thus I go by taste, whatever tastes the best with that particular powder is what I use. What do you like the most ?

Ah yeah thats pretty true i guess! I used to guzzle the milk down like nobody's business with my shakes, but a friend said amount i was drinking a day was a straight way to kidney stones (I was drinking around 1.6 litres per day), so now my morning shake i use water, and my post workout one i usually use milk, then on rest days i just stick to water based shakes! BSN syntha6 is great with water, it tastes almost the same as with milk!

I drink around 1 liter or more of milk a day. Because I drink shakes and eat quite a bit of oatmeal I need to have some milk in there.

I suppose if our diets are pretty spot on anyway, high milk consumption wouldnt be that much of a problem if the rest is good too! yeah oats without milk is like earth without oxygen haha

From a taste point of view, there's no doubt almost any shake is going to taste better with milk. If you're watching your carbs, water is the best way to go. Check your ingredient list on your protein. If you have xantham gum listed there, you're going to have mixing issues with milk unless you use a blender bottle and shake the living crap out of it.

skimmed milk :) 0,1 % for my oats. i can - for the live of me - not eat oats with water D: yikes..

for my protein: water. I use concentrated whey protein isolate. When you put water on this it gets almost as creamy as milk again. So i don't feel the need to add extra milk :) or i throw it with a banana together in the blender, and some water. that's "thick" enough already hehe

And yes if the rest of your diet is spot on, and you calculate the intake from fats etc in the milk, and subtract it from the rest of the day, i don't see much issues with that.

I use milk with my post-workout shake, just because the skim milk I use has 14g protein per 250ml and only 0.4g fat. I fit the carbs from the milk into my daily macros, I'm not really worried about the milk in my shake too much because it is the only milk I have...but if I can find another way to get all that protein though I would just always use water, that's what I use when I have a shake on my rest day.

Nothing wrong with either really - comes down to how it fits into your meal plan and I suppose your taste preference. There have been a few studies that suggest milk is like the perfect post workout drink too.

Calum,

When drinking milk, it is best to have some fat in it as skim milk dumps the lactose milk sugar directly into your bloodstream because there is no fat to slow absorption. 1% or 2% milk is fine if you don't want to drink full fat milk.

I use both the mediums daily.

My protien shake with milk is the first meal I have in the day. Literally, waking up with it and boy does it taste great! I generally use water as the mixing medium for the post workout shake. It's not because I chase after the "anabolic window which exists for 10-20 minutes" but because it's easier for the body to breakdown and absorb and keeps my macros in check.

Like others said, go by flavour.
I will say this. I personally never use Prostar Whey (By Ultimate Nutrition) with milk. It's too damn sweet! Leaves a really irritating after taste, unlike BSN and ON's Gold Standard.

#HTH

i use unsweetened almond milk because i find that the muscleTech Platinum is way to sweet as it is so unsweetened means no sugar, its low calories, and i get my protien from the powder and peanut butter i put in my shakes, almost no carbs. only downfall is slightly high sodium, i didnt know it had more calcium till i just made the picture lol.  depending if im doing 1 scoop or 2 of protien powder i do .5 or 1 cup so it barley affects macros so i can focus on the better things (also i hate milk) lol

Rob,

That has quite a bit of sugar. There are 8 servings in that container not 1 so you need to multiply all the numbers on the label by 8. I am sure you are using more than 1 cup (the suggested serving size) when you mix it with your protein powder. This is yet another way food manufacturers use the labeling laws legally to deceive consumers - they pick an unreasonably small serving size as they know most people don't know there are therefore multiple servings per container and just use the nutrition numbers on the label as that for the whole container.

that sugar is MILK  lol  the almond milk has 0

Left= Almond Milk

Right= 1% Milk

and im not using more than 1 cup  i weigh and measure everything and 1 carton of almond milk last me about 10-12 protien shakes depending on if i used 1/2 a cup or 1 cup.  i just like the almond milk better than regular milk
