Hi guys!

Today I was doing Chest and Forearms. And for the Chest part I was planning to do Flat BB Bench Press, Incline BB BP and then Butterfly with a Machine (all 4-5 sets for 6-8 reps).

However, after I was done with flat bench, the incline was occupied. So I went and did Decline for a first time in a long time, which was really fun. And afterthat, since I didn't want to ignore my upper chest, I did Incline bench. And that was it for the Chest part today.

So my question is - does it make sense to do a routine like this? If so, is it sufficient for 1 workout, or is still better to have a different finisher, like Butterfly, DB Fly, or Cable Crossover?

Sometimes it's hard to come up with a new routine each 6 weeks (which I try to do) when it comes to chest, because to me the options are more limited compared to other body parts.

This is my first post here, so be nice to me, haha. Thanks!

Does all parts of chest in one workout ? That is what I do.

If you can not find ways to change exercises every 6 weeks, at least change reps, sets and order of the exercises. Even that is enough to bring something new to the body.

Hey Marius,

Welcome to the forum bro!

I use BB bench press for my strength and DB work for isolation.

Chest wise, I like to mix things up with BB bench press...flat, incline & decline with DB the same.

Dips with a forward tilt on your body hits your chest well too.

DB flies are great for isolating your chest to.

As a finisher I head to the cable machine for some cable crossovers, making sure I get a good squeeze on my chest.

I hit chest twice a week and have started to see some good gains now.

If you are doing 4-5 sets per exercise, that might be enough, but you also might want to do this twice a week depending on how you respond to training @MariusLepeska.

All three are great exercises, but you can always hit the upper chest with high cable flies for something different, and same with the lower chest, maybe some low cable flys instead of the decline bench. You can even do DB flys to target the upper, lower and middle chest. Don't forget good old push-ups too!

Remember you don't HAVE to come up with a totally new routine every 4-6 weeks. If what you are doing is working but you want to switch it up, maybe start with incline, then flat, then decline, just for something different.

Thanks for all the replies!

Yeah, I know that Cable Crossovers are perfect finishers, but they've been heavily included in my previous two routines, so I really wanted to give them a break for a month or two, so I could maximize the benefits from it later. Same with Dips - I used them in the past for chest, but I now I do the variation for triceps, so this time they're not in my chest routine.

This was more of a question whether this current routine that I did yesterday gets a "pass" or whether the missing parts (flyes and crossovers) are essential.

I'll try to vary decline bench with the low crossovers, since I haven't done them in 2-3 months.

Definatly good to hit your chest at all angles. Flyes are a nice finisher to finish isolating your chest to fatigue but they are not needed. Hitting your chest at all 3 angles flat, incline and decline are the most important to work your chest all around. Adding flyes every once in a while is still a good thing and yes this is a good chest workout but I would do it twice a week. If you keep it at once a week then do add flyes flat and incline to make sure you can tear up your chest as much as possible for that week.

I have been training coming up on 6 years and have made some great gainz. I've done a lot of trial and error on myself as well as learned from others and through research online. I've come along way in strength and size since I've started. I will continue to learn and make myself better each day. There was nothing wrong with your routine @MariusLepeska, flys and crossovers aren't essential, they're just additonal exercises to hit your chest in different ways.

As long as you change things every now and then but always include exercises to target all parts of the chest, then it's all good.

Marius,

Variety is key. I still believe the foundation for any good chest development is flat and incline presses. Declines are nice as a finisher but if done too much you will get a teardrop look to your pecs - large on the bottom and small on top. Incline presses are most important to give you a fully developed chest look - especially from the sides. So I recommend 4 exercises - flat, incline, and the 2 other finishing exercises of your choice.
