So I've been working out for awhile now (3-4 years). When I first started working out I would get that burning sensation a after a workout that used to last for awhile. I haven't had that in my upper body in ages, and now that I started working out my lower body I don't get that feeling there when I work it out either.

I've asked someone this before and was told it had to do with the production of lactic acid in your body and that your body stops producing it the same after it's grown accustom to the the stress put on it.

I hear people talking about being sore after a hard workout and I get jealous cause I can't seem to get that anymore, regardless of how hard I workout. So I guess I was just wondering if anyone had any thoughts or suggestions on the matter. I'm always eager to learn.

Are you regularly changing up your routines, reps, sets, TUT, rest periods? A minor change in any of these could relate to different stresses on the body which may induce DOMS. Remember you don't need to feel DOMS in order to acheive strength or size gains. Infact some argue that DOMS is even a unecessary mechanism that is related to a way larger volume of work than what is actually needed. I personally never judge a workout on how sore I feel next day.

I've done all of those things. I've also varied between power for strength and hyperthropy for gains (not in search for that burn lol)

Anyways, at the risk of sounding a bit like a masochist I kinda miss that pain you got a few days later. While I don't judge my workout by how sore I am the next day, and I know I'm getting stronger and bigger, there is still something satisfactory about that soreness you have after a good workout.

How often do you change your routine ? Do you learn new exercises and use them in your schedules ? Do you increase the weight regularly ? What does your routine look like ? Are you sure you are working hard enough, the pump is only achievable through pumping enough blood into the muscle due to enough stimulation

I change my workout every week to two weeks depending on if I like the schedule or not so my body doesn't get accustome to the workout, usually switching between heavy weight for power and then volume for gains.

I'm getting the pump in the gym. That's not the issue. I can out work most people in the gym too (I know from people trying to workout with me). I'm just not feeling that soreness afterwards.

I would say as long as you feel like your really getting in a solid workout and your having good results, then don't worry about it. The important thing is pushing yourself and improving. As long as you know your accomplishing both those goals then consider yourself lucky that your not extremely sore. Just means you have one less excuse to push just as hard the next day

On a similar note, my body feels fine and I have a little bit of free time. Since I'm not feeling sore and I usually feel rather energized throughout the day, I've been thinking about maybe working out two times a day occasionally and maybe working up from there. I'd be working different muscles obviously, but any thoughts?

I know it used to be the only way to train back during Arnold's time but is rarely seen now a days, so just looking for some thoughts from others. :)

Connor,

I agree with many of the comments above.  I would add that maybe you should pump up the volume.  If you are doing 3-4 exercises and 8-10 reps per exercise, you are only doing a total volume of 120 reps.  Try bumping that up to 200-250 reps for large muscle groups and 100 - 150 reps for small muscle groups.  For instance for legs I will sometimes do 10 sets of 10 of squats supersetted with 10 sets of 10 of leg press.  30 seconds rest between super sets and 120 seconds between each completed superset.  You could try 10 sets of 10 reps of long bar curls with 30 seconds rest between each set.  Your body does adapt and lactic acid levels will fluctuate.  Increasing volume well above what you are currently doing will definitely cause some DOMS :-)

About two and a half weeks ago I shifted my workout that I'd been following for two weeks prior, but I'll give you that to give you an idea of the amount of volume I was doing.

This was Monday and Thursday's routine, so twice a week.

Quads:

Squats 8x 12

Leg Press 6x 12

Leg Extensions 6 x 12

Chest:

Barbell Bench Press 8x 12

Dumbbell Flat Bench Flyes 6x 12

Barbell Inclined Bench Press 6x 12

Dumbell Incline Bench Flyes 6x 12

Dumbell Pull Overs 6x 12

Aswell as a vigerous ab workout (which varies based on how I feel or what I think needs work).

I workout 6 times a week (as I stated above) and when I was on this schedule, the volume for all the days were similar.

Volume wise thats 240 for quads and 384 for chest. But maybe I should increase that still, thanks :)

Do you have a workout partner Braser?  Maybe you would benifit from FORCED REPS.  Seems like the volume is there in your workout.  For me, I don't get CRAZY sore until I do a workout where I am literally failing on my last 1 - 2 reps and have a partner help me slowly through them.

... screaming helps too lol

I tried working out with people, but I tend to get a few people trying to workout with me if I go workout where I have more people. I think I'm going to fall back to going solo, just for the higher volume stuff. Think I can work harder and move from thing to thing faster cause most can't usually keep up. When I get back into power things for strength gains, think I'm going to get a partner again for the competitiveness.

Thanks Scott :)

Connor,

I agree the volume is there.  It very well could be that your body has adapted very well to training and continues to do so.  You are only 18 so your body is within the prime age for muscle growth and recovery - usually between 17 - 25 you grow and recover like a weed.  I wouldn't feel envious or disappointed if your not sore after your workouts and have more endurance than other people.  Chalk it up to either good genetics and/or validation that your meal plan and rest amounts are on target :-)

Gotta blame the family tree on that one.......lol.   Hey my father's side is short and stocky and my mother's side is tall and thin. I have the upper body and height of my father's family and the legs of my mother's family. My back or arms grow no problem but my legs and calves I have to beat like a plow horse to do anything...........damn genetics :-)
