Hi All,

I find that I really struggle with motivation for getting to the gym. I first joined a gym 3 years ago, and find I will go regularly 4-5 times a week for a few months, then as exams and other bits and pieces crop up, I'll not go for a few months. As a result I have made very little progress over the past years.

As I will be turning 30 next year, I've decided to have another push and really hope I can stay motivated this time.

To try and keep motivated, I have decided to book myself on a Half Marathon next year - October 2014. This is plenty of time for me to get prepared, and by having an event to look forward to it should get me to the gym, and keep my motivation levels high.

However, my main focus is to try and build muscle. Is there a way which I can combine marathon training with building muscle.

Any advice on keeping my motivation levels high is much appreciated. :-)

Thanks Hermanites :-)

Whats up man? Everyone struggles with this problem sooner or later trust me, we are only human. But what I have found that helps me immensely to stay motivated is to do things that keep you in the mindset of reaching your goals on a daily basis. Some of this might sound funny to you, but here is what I did to stay motivated. And these things helped me build 15-20lbs of muscle and go from a skinny looking nerd to someone people started asking fitness advice from. Here's what I did:

1. Keep a calendar of some sort on the wall where you will see it everyday. (Next to the sink or similar area) Write what workout you are going to do the next day or two on it in big letters so that you are already in the mindset that it is in your schedule.

2. Keep a photo or a couple of photos pinned up next to the calender of things that make you want to acheive the body you want. ( I kept pics of Mila Kunis and Jessica Alba in bikinis.) Hey-it worked! I also kept a picture of a physique competitor named Steve Cook up because I wanted to look similar to how he does. While it was un-realistic that I would achieve his physique in a short term, I knew this fact and only wanted to get a similar appearance.

3. Keep Mens Health or Fitness magazines lying around the house where you will see them when you are doing daily tasks. Pick them up every so often and read an article out or just skim through the pages. I found that this not only kept me motivated, I was constantly being educated on fitness and nutrition.

4. Watch You-tube videos that make you want to go kill the gym and find some tunes that really get you pumped up!

5. Find a good pre-workout supplement. I took Lemonade C-4 for one reason: to get that tingling sensations and get my butt off of the couch and go to the gym! I dont necessarily believe pre-workout supplements provide any benefit besides this, but it is a good one!

Well I hope this helps! Good luck bro.

Been there, done that!!! Now that I'm 49 yrs old my motivation is to get swole before I get too old and my body will not be able to do it. Don't waste time. Get inspiration from good people like Scott and the members of this site. Check out youtube videos and find somethng there that will motivate you to work out. That's how I found out about Scott.

For marathon, my favorite inspiration is Ryan Hall (U.S.). I watch his videos from time to time.

If you have a girlfriend that's into working out, that will be the ultimate. Love is such a powerful thing. It'll make you do things that you never imagined you can do.

Marathon and muscle building don't go together in my opinion. Practicing for the marathon burns a lot of calories.

Haha EliteFew nice advice!!! Myself also am doing most of these you mentioned!! Yes, some may sound funny but they are really motivating (like watching a sexy woman's photo ;) )!

Also, watching Fitness Channels on YouTube is a very good way of being motivated!! I may add something new here. As far as myself, long time ago everyone called me a skinny guy, everyone was saying i didn't got a good amount of weight so i was weak, not having strength etc.. So i took a decision, because all this was starting to get very anoying for me, was making my life quite depressing, didn't want to go out and find a girlfriend and generaly was destroying my self confidence. My decision was to put on as much weight as i could (withought using any supplements) so i would surpise everyone and get my fu%&ed up self confidence back!! Main goal is not bodybuilding but something between fitness and bodybuilding.. I am on a good way now, i have put on 17 lbs since i started working out (1.5 year aproximately), people are starting to say: ''Oh John i see u put on some weight, you are much better now'', ''From totaly skinny u went to a pretty good physique. Nice change, u should continue what you are doing'', girlfriend were saying: ''Nice change at your body John, u don't look like a young boy now'' and other good words.. :) I thing there is NOTHING more motivating than watching your goals being reached and getting the people's copliments! That gives me the strenght to continue sticking up with my meal plan, and ,why not, eat more and more, KILL every single workout and generaly be more happy in my life (ye it does it)!!

Hope my story motivated you man, try to be "THE STRONGEST VERSION OF YOURSELFE" and be better day by day at everything you do at your life..

Thank you everyone for your kind words and advice. I've never been as motivated as I am now, and booked myself on the half marathon as well so hopefully this is the push that I need.

The final wake up call was getting ready for my Christmas party last night and noticing I had a little belly on me... I've never had this before, so it will be all systems go.

Will be aiming to take some progress pictures once a week to track my progress which I shall post on my profile / board thingy. lol.

Thank you again everyone :-)

I love this movie. I wish he did the sequel instead of Ice Cube.. Ice Cube killed it

Right now, my motivation is when people I don't even know notices my physique. The results of working out are starting to show up. This motivates me to even work out harder.

The story: we got invited for a dinner at a friend's house Jan 1. There were a few guests there. After dinner and all, we all decided to get some pictures taken around the dinner table. Then this lady said, "I wanna stand next to the weight lifter." And to my surprise, she stood next to me!!! And then she asked me if I'm strong and she further said that I look strong. By this time I was so surprised maybe a bit embarrassed cause everybody was looking at me. I told her that I am still in the military and is required to work out regularly.

I was wearing a long sleeve fitted stretchy shirt so it kinda followed my curves, but not tight.

But this is a first for me. And hopefully not the last. Some people at work also notices the change.
