Men.

You wonderful and strong creatures full of willpower.

You always amaze me... when I see your sexy (sorry but not sorry) V-taper, beautiful round delts and big biceps that make me want to hang on to... and legs.

Right, just legs. They are functioning, so that's a fantastic thing to begin with. But is that it?

Guys, I'm not kidding: The minority(!) of men at my gym with well trained/bulky upper halves has matching, muscular legs. And I'm not talking about little visual imbalances, I'm talking about men that could pass as caricatures. Yesterday I saw the most extreme one, so I just have to ask... and sorry if it may sound rude, but I really don't get it.

What is it with men and skipping leg days?

Do you REALLY think, a pumped up torso carried around by matchsticks looks good? (I know working out is not only about the looks, but if you're so busy with the bulk in your chest and biceps, you certainly are into looks)

Or don't you have large mirrors at home/in the locker room to see your whole body naked?

I'm really curious and hope someone can shed some light on that topic.

Really cool post, and fitting, because I did legs today ! I agree, legs is necessary for a good looking body. I do not know what people think of when skipping leg day, I love traning legs, so i would not know.

These people are often the "look at me" types in the gym. Half repping 2 plates on the bench, shoulder pressing 80 lbs dumbbells for about 3 inches of movement up and down. They only care what others around them think as opposed to getting results. Leg day is a love/hate relationship for anybody serious about training. You absolutely hate the way you feel while grinding out true working sets. Let's face it, it's painful as hell. But you love how you feel after and the results you get.

I agree with this 100%. You see guys with the bar racked up with the gyms stock of plates then do half reps, plenty of grunting Then throw or drop the bar. I will be hitting legs on Friday night then suffer over the weekend haha!!! Painful, but worth it!!!

Funny but I see the same thing. Guys don't want to work the muscles they feel aren't seen and if they do they half rep it. Not here us Hermanites do full ROM and never skip leg day! I hit mine twice a week. More guys out there just need to understand the importance.

I have been training coming up on 6 years and have made some great gainz. I've done a lot of trial and error on myself as well as learned from others and through research online. I've come along way in strength and size since I've started. I will continue to learn and make myself better each day. Interesting post @hur1coco.

I think it is just that some guys have this idea that the upper body is all important because legs can be covered up easily? I don't really know the main reason for it. But I think it also comes down to how serious you are about your training.

Those of us who are really serious about building an overall physique, staying fit and athletic and looking our best, we know that we need to train our legs, even though it might not be everyone's favourite day at the gym. We know it needs to be done, and we know how important legs are for overall growth.

Then there are those who simply go in to the gym thinking that if the can bench more than everyone else at the gym, they are pretty much the man. Legs are more of a 'if I feel like it, I will do it' for them.

Anyway, have you checked out this article? Just to show you that not everyone thinks legs are obsolete :)

And @CDNrower, I totally agree with your last part especially about that feeling after leg day - so good! You always know you've smashed out a good workout after leg day!

There you are @hur1coco

Very nice post!

Well.. I never skip leg day! But I don't understand.. no matter how hard I work with my calves, still it won't grow. I trained my calves 2 times a week now. Exercises are really intense.. maybe calves are just a stubborn muscle or the size of it is base on our genes.

Hey eveyone!

Can you give me some good tips for stubborn calves! Thank you! ahahahaha

Hey Jordan,

maybe that's one of the reasons, legs can be covered up in bigger pants. BUT! Sooner or later it's time to undress

I really think it's not only about how serious you are but also how smart. One can be serious and completely dumb at the same time. Now just to make it clear: I'm not saying everyone who skips leg days is dumb in general, but the approach to fitness/building muscle while only focussing on one half of the body is somehow dumb and narrow minded. Not wanting to see your functioning body as a whole and not trying to keep it in overall balance is just not making sense to me. As you said: We know it needs to be done, and we know how important legs are for overall growth.

Guys who love to wear jeans skip leg day hahahaha. But in all seriousness, I think it comes down to education in fitness. When I first started lifting, I just wanted a big upper body so I didnt focus on legs. After time though, I learned the importance of lifting legs. I still absolutely hate doing legs, but I still get them done

Hey Nick or Justin

if I may ask: Did you build a lot of muscle on your upper body before you started working out your legs, too? Or was there no extreme visual difference?

yes, actually both of us used to get made fun of for it haha. It was one of those things though where we had no though of ever competing and just wanted to build up the glory muscles haha. We didnt completely skip legs though, maybe once a month we'd do a couple sets of squats lol. I found though, that once i did realize I need to do legs, they matched up with the rest of my body relatively quick
