Scott has been on me to post some progress pics so today I finally relented. I don't have any from the past but these pics were taken today and are based on my current measurements and assuming my bodyfat is about 11% - not sure if that is high or low. The pic showing my left side (bottom pic) is the one with the torn bicep. You will note it is shorter and higher than my right bicep but my strength is near 100% after 5 months.

Thanks Kostas. Ironically, I felt the muscle tear but it felt like it was my forearm. It didn't hurt at all until later that night and then into the next morning. I immediately was icing it and it swelled up pretty bad. All the blood drained into my forearm which is why I initially thought I tore a muscle in my forearm.

It kinda sucks as my biceps are/were my best muscle group with nice long muscle bellies and straight cephalic veins going down the side. Anyways, it could have been a lot worse and I could've tore the distal tendon off the bone and would have been out of commission for at least 6 months. I was back down the gym training lightly in 1 week. I look at it now as a battle scar and a reminder to lift like I am 50 not like I am a young strong dude like you in my 20's :-)

Thanks Mike. I am hoping people will see this and it will inspire them and remind them that consistent training and good nutrition over the years goes a long way and can keep you looking and feeling younger as you age :-)

Great Job John!! You look great! It is motivating for this 46-year old seeing someone a little older looking fit. Need to put one of the picture as your profile and also as your thumbnail.

Like you said it is about nutrition nutrition!!!

I sent (I admit, with a bit "forced" manner) my father to the gym few years ago at age little above 50. He had three "stupid" accidents with broken bones, nothing serious but they were there. That was the main reason. Weightlifting takes care for stronger bones (fighting osteoporosis), make your body more resistant by strengtening muscles and ligaments, stabilizing joints, helps to prevent losing muscle mass due to aging, etc.,... Then he found he swims and cycle much easier and comfortable than before. And now he is a gym freak :D Nothing serious, but always with smile on cruise from exercise to exercise at age of 63.

@jmboiardi, you don't look like ripped young men, but you look rock solid ;) thumbs up!

Looking really solid, John! Definitely something to aspire to for a "fellow 50 year old"! (actually I'll be 52 in July)

Just two questions : how does one (accurately) measure BF %..?? I have seen the "calipers" in various doctor's offices, but is that a REAL measurement? I always thought you have to be immersed in H2O or something to have a TRUE BF % taken? (or even a blood draw?)

And : Sorry to bring up a "bad moment" again, but were you deadlifting when you tore your bicep (switch grip?); I've read that this is a rather common injury when doing heavy weight on deads--supposedly MORE common that back injuries?!

I'm only lifting a month now, but I can see / feel changes already....and this forum has been a huge reason for that!
