Hello everyone ! I recently thought about if there was any limit as to how many scoops of protein a day one should consume. Obviously the answer is, as many as it takes to fill in the remaining protein grams you need to meet your macros that you could not get from your meals. But honestly, this answer is not really satisfying. How many scoops should be enough for anyone to consume before we are crossing the line into overusing a protein powder. I use 2 scoops of Optimum Nutrition gold standard whey after my workouts and then have a meal 30 minutes after that. I find this to be a fairly normal consumption, I mean think about it. 50 grams of your protein intake in one day come from powders, should that not be enough ? The body needs to digest this fairly large amount of protein, and if you then go even further and use even more powders your stomach might take a blow.

What do you think ? How many scoops of protein do you usually consume on a daily basis ?

I take 2-3 scoops at the moment. I know theres lots of opinions on protein, tons of research to be had out there like, what's too much, how much you should take daily, when should you take it ect. but I defiantly know your body can only digest so much in a certain time period. What that is can be up for debate but I feel ingesting no more than 40g-50g in a 2 hour period works for me. What I mean by that is after my workout I take a shake and breakfast with said amount and won't ingest more protein for at least 2 hours. If my stomach takes a blow from powders it's usually one that my body has trouble processing or if I take them too close together like a pre and post workout followed by breakfast sort of thing. I take one after my workout, late day snack(if needed) and before bed. I use BSN Syntha 6 and I don't have any issues.

I have been training coming up on 6 years and have made some great gainz. I've done a lot of trial and error on myself as well as learned from others and through research online. I've come along way in strength and size since I've started. I will continue to learn and make myself better each day. I have 2 scoops a day of BSN Syntha 6. First one at breakfast then another after my workout and this works good for me without any issues. I am also thinking of adding Casein before bed.

On a normal day, I take two scoops with my post-workout shake and one scoop with my yoghurt before bed. Two scoops of my powder = 23.8g protein, so not too much really.

But there are some days when I take 5 scoops in total as well. I suppose it depends on how much protein is in each scoop as to how many scoops is best. But it also comes down to individuals and how they respond to them.

50g from powders is enough, sure, but when you are on a high protein diet, having a powder you can just gulp down as a drink or something makes hitting that goal a lot easier, more convienient, and cheaper than eating an entire chicken to help you reach your protein goal.

If someone was basically living on powder alone, that would be a problem. Other than that, it's no big deal I don't think. Just whatver suits you and your goals.

Timing ? No not really. As long as you hit your macros and make sure to feed the body before the workout and after it should be fine.

It depends. I train fasted so I need that shake in immediatley after my workout. Also I don't think taking half your daily protein goal for the day in one shot would be a good idea. Maybe I over comlicate things a little sometimes but when it all comes down to it you just need to hit your numbers for the day.

William,

I do 2 shakers of protein - 1 with 2 scoops (50g) of Optimum Nutrition Casein and water and 1 with 2 scoops (60g) of Optimum Nutrition ProComplex with low fat milk. On workout days, I drink 1/2 a shaker of casein with my first meal and 1 shaker of ProComplex after my workouts. That equates to 25g + 60g = 85g total.

On non-workout days, I have 1/2 shaker of casein with my first meal and the other half of casein with my last meal = 50g total.

I think using any more supplemental protein and scoops is wasting money and being too dependent on protein powders rather than food for your protein intake.

I agree with your points here. Timing can be important if you are eating in a certain pattern. Moreover drinking half your protein goal in a sitting might be a bit to much for the digestive system

I agree 100%. Food should always be the main source of protein in any diet. Keeping a good balance between where you get your protein is a good way to even it out.

Personally, I think its always best to go with what makes sense. No point in taking 3 scoops right after your workout...your gonna #$#@ 80% of it out in an hour...lol As with most things, your body can only consume so much at once and in a day...how much is too much?? (different groups of thought...some say 1g per lb...some 1.5...some say 2x your lbs in g's of protein, depending on your goal) You go to 10 different people and youll get 10 different answers...go with what you feel. I dont have money to burn so I choose to go for the lower end, and would rather know Im getting the best bang for my buck vs taking too much, and it going to waste and sending money down the toilet because my body cant comsume that much.

I think it really depends on you...personally I try to get most of my protein from foods and can get 100-120g's on an average day from that. I take 1 scoop(apx 25-30g's depending on brand Im using) an hour before and 1 scoop immediately after a muscle workout. Sometimes Ill throw one more as a small meal replacement between Breatfast-lunch or between lunch-supper depending on my days activities. If its a day Im not working out, I usually just take one scoop to supplement my diet. at some point through out the day.

MOST OF ALL....taking any amount of crappy quality protein isnt gonna do anything for anyone except take money from your account and put it in the co.'s. Generally you get what you pay for....and research it...but you use ON so you made a great choice IMO.
