Heya,

What am I doing wrong? I have been doing triceps workout but I can't seem to get any muscle contraction. THe only time I got a REALLY good contraction when I first started working out. I have tried everything; tucking my elbows to the side of my body, keep elbows in same place, change weights from high to low, vice versa. It just does not work! I am quite frustrated :/

I have tried close-grip bench press, tricep pushdown machine. If I do the dumbell tricep overhead extension, I just feel my elbows cracking.

Thank you as always NATION :D

Hey man!

It's possibly just a mind-muscle connection you need to work on. Really focus on using your arm (tricep), not your shoulder for the movement. Think about how your tricep should be activating, and really try to flex your tricep for each exercise.

Also, have you seen these two videos? They might help you to get that contraction and avoid 'cracking' your elbows. Your wrist positioning could be especially important.

As long as you are extending through your elbows, your triceps are getting work done, so there is no reason to be too much concerned about whether you feel the contraction or not. It happens anyway. As the triceps get bigger you should be able to establish a better mind-muscle connection and feel them more when they are working. Feeling a muscle working though, has nothing to do with gaining muscle or strength.

For me I get the best pump on rops or V bar push downs, maybe try that. If you're really chasing the pump then do a set of 10 V bar push dows as heavy as you can, get right over the weight and get full reps, then drop the weight by 50% and do 20 reps, chest up, arms tucked in stright form etc... then drop the weight right down to almost nothing and pump a really fast 20 reps.......If you don't feel the pump from that then you're triceps aren't there ;)
