What is progressive overload and how can I implement it?

By Scott Herman in Muscle Gain · Published

Progressive overload is a way of continually increasing your output in the gym.

It ensures your muscles do not get used to doing the same thing OVER AND OVER AGAIN, and therefore forces the muscle to adapt and grow.

You can implement progressive overload throughout the duration of a single workout, or you can overload from one week to the next by increasing your output from the last time you worked a certain muscle.

It can be implemented by :

  • Increasing the amount of weight you lifted or the number of reps AND/OR sets you performed
  • Performing supersets
  • Performing drop sets
