If I suffer an injury that stops me from lifting, should I do some other exercises instead? How long should I wait after an injury before I return to my normal weights?

If the injury permits, yes.

You should always consult with a doctor first about any injury which is causing you problems and/or discomfort.

If they give you the all clear, or you can use light weights or just your BODYWEIGHT to perform some exercises, then it would be a good idea to do so.

Give the injury as much time as it needs to fully heal before going back to your usual weights. If it does not heal properly, you could make the injury worse and be incapacitated for even longer.
