In peoples opinion which is better for hypertrophy? I have tried both splits however I have always used push/pull/legs for strength and the typical bro split for hypertrophy. I have got great results from using the splits this way but as I have never tried push/pull/legs for hypertrophy I can't say which I prefer.

Daniel,

I used Push/Pull/Legs for many years with great results.  I have modified my split a bit to the following:

Mon - Chest/Bis/cardio - I like Bis with Chest because Tris are already getting worked and I want to focus on them when they are fresh

Tue - Legs/Claves/cardio - Self explanatory.  One day to focus on and crush Legs

Wed - Rest

Thu - Back/calves/cardio - Same here, one day to focus and crush Back

Fri - Shoulders/Tris/cardio - The Tris get worked a bit with shoulder presses but not like Chest so you can really destroy them with focus

Sat & Sun - Rest

I like to do the bigger muscle groups like Legs, Chest, and Back earlier in the week and smaller muscles at the end.  I find I have more energy reserves over the week.  Legs takes a lot out of me so having a rest day before I hit Back helps a lot.

I like keeping the blood in a similar area e.g. chest and biceps keep the blood in the relative same area just like shoulders and triceps.  I used to do chest with back and arms with shoulders but chest and back need a lot of volume so I split them up.  The Chest/Back combo does give you a great upper body pump but you need to limit your volume or you could overtrain.

Well, in my opinion that would depend on your genetics. For example, I have "huge" chest and back and "small" arms and shoulders.
Most people are the other way around because chest and back are more difficult to hit (indirect tension). They dont have the muscle-mind connection required. In my case, I HAVE to have a shoulder day and an arm day. If I just do chest with triceps, my triceps never grow, etc. etc.

But for most people who are trying to achieve better trunk thickness, push/pull/legs will work just fine.

Btw, when I say shoulder day, I dont even include traps. I put them on my back day. Shoulder day is just the 3 heads :)

Judging from your photos, your arms/shoulders are quite developed so the classic push/legs/pull with high volume would be beneficial for you.

Thanks for the information guys. What I'm doing now is increasing the volume of my lagging bodyparts whilst just adding a maintainence day in for the remaining areas. I have only just started to notice growth in my chest due to a lack of stimulation so I'm really focusing on trying to bring it up to match my arms.

Yea man thats a good idea. My chest really started growing when I added a crapload of volume. Supersetting presses with flys and drop sets on the bench presses really did the trick to me. Even doing pushups and dips between sets to really annihilate the chest.

Some people told me and might tell you that you should add a 2nd chest day and lower the volume of both sessions. I say no! Keep the volume high and destroy those pecs 1x/week :D  #HTH!

I am using a push/pull/legs split for about 2 months now. I really LOVE this split. It feels like its exactly the right frequency for me. If you haven't tried it, you should definitely give it a try some time.
