I was doing a chest workout and hurt my uper back doing cable flys. it hurts in the area in the middle of my shoulder blades and slightly above. as soon as I noticed pain I stopped the exercise and changed the workout. when I tried to do incline db skullcrushers I had pain in the same area. next I did straight bar pushdowns and lateral raises with no pain. prior to the flys I did db bench press with no pain.

I'm worried about this as I have never had any sort of back pain before. any advice ? should I skip my next back workout?

Sounds like it's your traps. Might have pulled/strained something. If it's too painful to train back it might be a good idea to give it some recovery time and focus on something else.. but you might still be able to do lat-focused movements.

Does it hurt when you retract your scapula?

It's fine when I retract my scapula, but when I move my head backwards I feel it a lot

So it's probably a combination of neck and trap muscles. I'd say you pulled/strained something. See if you can do some lat movements.. you might even be able to do some upper back movements. Just avoid anything that is painful, and start foam rolling your neck/traps/back daily, and stretch it out thoroughly after every workout.
