HI guys, I have been gone for some time due to tearing ligiments in both my shoulders.

i ganed about 10kg in pudge and lost most my strength .

2 years to be exact , im starting serious lifting again tomorrow . I have been doing light exesrsize in prep just to get all my muscles ready.

I dont have the strength since i am now 216 lbs to do my sets of pullup actually only manage a couple.

How much difference is there between lat pulldowns and pullups . since i can still do "chindowns" and "pulldowns"

besides the fact that I would not be involving all the micro muscles that stabalise me when doing pullups.

So, would doing Lat pulldowns get me back to pullups or can it be a complete substitute .

Anthony thanx for the great site Scott.

The lat pull downs will help strengthen your lats again. If you lose that weight you put on, the pull ups will become easier.

Can you wrap a resistance band around the bar to help you rep out some pull ups? Or maybe have a spotter lift your legs a bit?

Pull downs will help to build the musle, but it just isn't the same. I use a plyo box or an upright chair....something stable. I will stand it up a few feet in front of the pull up station. When I run out of gas, I use it to get force reps. I am 3 months back from a chest injury, and am at the point when next week on heavy back day I believe I will start doing weighted pull ups again. My back and my traps are the two areas people tend to compliment me on the most, and back comes down to pull ups.

Sometimes, just for shits and giggles, I will go wide, then close, then chins in a circuit style. Only put about 20 seconds in between sets, and use the foot support for forced reps. When I go to failure like that on every set the pump is ridiculous. It might not work for you, but I can rep 6-8 on the 300lb or 136 kilo stack for wide grip pull downs, and they never work like wide grip pull ups. I am around the 205 or 93 kilo mark, so it may translate for you.

If this helps at all, then fantastic. If not, I hope you find the information you need.
