I'm fairly new here about three weeks. Some of you have seen me join and most have no clue. Anyways, glad to be back on the forum and able to hold up my phone. June 4th I got a cold and high fever and cough. June 6 I actually went to doctors and was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection. Then June 9th had to go back in and found out my entire left lung was full and infect with pneumonia and my upper right love was also affected. I would wish this on anyone.

I am am never sick and this has put me out of the gym since. I was also on vacation when this started so I'm now two weeks without working out. I haven't been able to eat like I normally do and my concern is for gains. I've lost ten lbs already. I hope I can get these gains back easily. Very depressed about all this. Keeping my head up though, can't workout or go to work for at least another week.

Oh man, that's not good...

Rest up and get in good food. Maybe search for some new workouts/exercises that will get you excited to get back in the gym and try out.

Not good at all @Okinawa82!

Food is probably the main issue here, just like it is when it comes to gaining muscle. If you can't train, but you're worried because your losing weight, try and keep your caloric intake reasonably high. Maybe lower the carbs a bit because you are inactive, bump up protein and keep fats fairly high too.

What are your current macros? and BMR?

Hey @Okinawa82!

I understand exactly where you're comin from. I caught pneumonia last year due to cramped up conditions in the gym and people sneezing around. I had to be on life support for 14 days. Worst 14 days of my life. I lost around 7 kg (15.4 lbs) muscle mass!

You should wait for the entire infection to clear out and focus on getting your immune system back up. Get them vitamins and raw veggies. Also, pneumonia causes you to loose your stamina since it effects your respiratory system. The good thing is that a leaisurely brisk walk/Jog in the morning (not fasted!) for a week can reignite your repiratory tract. During this phase, while beng cautious, start doing some basic bodyweight excercises for a week (pushups, pullups). You might feel weaker than before but trust me, calisthenics can improve (or reignite) your mind muscle connection while not putting to much load on your body. in a weke or 2 you'll be able to hit the gym pretty hard and in 3 weeks, you'll be almost back to what you were lifting before the infection.

Be sure to keep your diet on point. Hittig your macros is gonna be more important while coming back and like @JoeHurricane said, increase the protein and fat intake while lowering the carbs.

It's a bummer but if you take appropriate steps, the muscle loss can be mitigated. Keep at it and you'll be back at it man! :)

Hey @Okinawa82

We have the same problem about 4 years ago.. I got TB and Pneumonia! But I'm done with these. Well, first if you are going to consult to your doctor.. he will tell you to stop weight lifting for a while until you were given a proper treatment to recover. The treatment is about 6 months and it can be longer depends on your situation. I didn't say ro stop your trainign totally... just avoid weight lifting for a while..but you can do a light basic body weight training to somehow keep those gains.

Feeling weak....decreasing weight so fast...losing appetite, they are just a few symptos of having pneumonia. Don't be so confuse of what to eat. You need to eat a lot to fight with those symptoms. As what the other said above... eat enough carbs, high in protein and fats, take multi-vitamins.. especially Vitamin C. Eat more vegetables as well. You can back to your normal training after your treatment or if you are fully recover. Don't think of it too much..depression and stress can make it worst in your condition. Just think normal and everything will be fine in no time.

( Beginner ) 1 Year Lifting Experience Bachelor of Science in Marketing Management Don't be afraid to make mistakes, face failure and fall, because most of the time, the greatest rewards come from doing the things that scare you the most. You'll get everything you wish for... just focus and work on it. And you'll get more than you could ever have imagined. Who knows where life will take you. The road is long, and in the end - - the journey is the destination.

I appreciate the feedback and help from you guys! Sorry it took me so long to respond. I read your comments, but of course felt out of it and didn't have the energy to respond using my cellphone.

Just an update: I am feeling much better, all my meds are almost gone except an antibiotic. Few more days of that, but a ton more puffs from the albuterol inhaler. I got to finally start walking around the block including taking my two dogs a lab and a cane corso (Italian mastiff). It gave me a sweat. Today I am going to begin just some full body weightless workouts at home. I am trying to search to see if Scott has any videos but I'm not a playing member. I'm thinking push-ups, wall squats, abs, calves and maybe start with ten reps each to not overdo myself. Figure maybe start with ten then twenty and so on each day until Wednesday which I feel will be my first day back at the weights and again I will be starting out lightly

You could try something like this:

But what you suggested (push ups, squats etc) will be good too. Home workouts don't have to be super fancy.

Be sure you stay hydrated and don't go too intense if you still feel a bit off.

Have you calculated your BMR and figured out your macros with the help of the @mealplan page??

@joehurricane thanks! I found his video about being a ten for 2010 lol such an old video. It's cool to see how he started compared to now. The video you sent is much more intense! Yesterday I attempted 15 jumping jacks, 15 push-ups and by the time I got to crunches my chest was a little tight so had to back off and relax.

Im going to go at it again today and as you suggested stay hydrated. I'm going to be in with a good breakfast of steak and eggs, low carb mission wraps and avocado.

Last but but not least I will take the time to watch the video on macros and but again today to really get a grasp on it and write down notes about my calculations. Thanks for such quick responses my friend.

First day back in the gym since all this came about, about 4 weeks. I did Calisthenics and besides coughing and getting tons of stares because people probably thought I was sick I did well. I took some longer breaks than usual, put in a good sweat and went light. Overall felt great and now consuming a post workout shake , next some whole grain penne with lean ground beaf meatballs and reduced fat cream of mushroom soup mixed with Greek yogurt Instead of sour cream.

Sounds good @Okinawa82!

Don't worry about people looking at you, worry about yourself and you'll be alright! And don't worry about taking it light - there's no point going back and going balls to the wall when your body just isn;t ready for it.

@joehurricane thank you man! Yesterday I hit chest after getting pumped up on one of Scott's videos lol. Overall felt great, but boy has my strength reduced! Was only benching three sets of 10-12 with 145 when I use to do 215.... Baby steps though. I guess slow progress is better than none. Plus if I try to climb the ladder too fast I will just plateau anyhow.
