Scott, I have a protein bar sometimes to help me get to my daily protein goal, but I was thinking of sometimes replacing it with this protein shake for some variety:

https://www.amazon.com/Premier-Protein-Shakes-Chocolate-Ounces/dp/B00AAJRPZY/ref=pd_bxgy_121_img_2?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B00AAJRPZY&pd_rd_r=08XWNEZ0EQG215Z5KBT7&pd_rd_w=M3jfz&pd_rd_wg=boS6M&refRID=08XWNEZ0EQG215Z5KBT7&th=1

It's 30g of protein with only 1g of sugar and 3g of fat. I wanted to know what you think of it, specifically the ingredients...do you see anything there that may turn you off from this shake? You can see the label on one of the pictures in the link.

John, feel free to chime in but I already know you'll say not to drink this as you're a proponent of eating only natural food. However, I only have the bars 3x/week to help me reach my daily protein goal so I wouldn't drink these often.

It's obviously got some varied ingredients in there, some that you would have to do more research on to fully know what they are. From time to time, there shouldn't be any harm in this. However, instead of using that, why not just invest in a decent protein powder or something? It will save you money in the long run and you'll probably be getting a better product.

Actually, what I would suggest is use these and don't use the protein bars at all. Protein bars are just glorified candy bars. They are loaded with sugar for their size. This protein supplement looks fine and is lower in sugar for its size :-)

The only supplements I use are protein powder because even when eating wholesome, natural foods there is only so much you can eat in a day.

I already use protein powder too pretty much daily. The bars are more of an on-the-go protein source...I eat them only 3x/week (immediately after a workout).

Well the bars I eat are only 3g of sugar. It does also have 5g of sugar alcohol (I think it's the maltitol syrup) but from the research that I did on sugar alcohol I think those are better than sugar. Here's a link to the bar I eat:

For your post below about sugar alcohol, yes it is better, it's kind of like an artificial sweetner. And that's OK about having protein powder daily.. like I say, having a bar or a shake like this isn't the end of the world in moderation, but it will save you money for sure if you just double up on your protein shakes rather than buying these. Or you could just take other on the go snacks like nuts or even meats/yoghurt in a cooler, that's what I often do if I need food with me and I don't want to go and buy anything when I'm out.

Well as you know, I look deeper into the affects of foods on the body :-) Sugar alcohols are only slightly better than pure sugar. They still throw-off the balance of healthy bacteria in your microbiome and really should be avoided. While this may not either seem important or is not something you fully understand, the microbiome is critical for health and full absorption of micro-nutrients from the food you eat. For me, I believe in putting everything in your favor to promote growth when natural. However, as Scott mentioned using them in moderation is not going to cause any harm and you don't have to go to the nutritional extremes like me.

I also agree with Scott that it is better to put your money into just protein powder supplements. You can mix it up with water in a shaker bottle and bring it with you for convienence. It does not need to be refrigerated so you can carry it with you. Too me it is redundant to pay for protein powders, protein bars, and pre-packaged protein drinks. Plus, if you are relying too much on these supplements then you are not eating enough with your meal plan and you should fix that first.

I wouldn't say I rely heavily on them. I do have the protein powder almost daily, but without it I'd have to eat even more food and I'm already reaching my limit with how much food I can eat. Eating is supposed to be enjoyable, but to be honest, it's become almost like a chore for me because I have to eat so much. So yes, I do have the powder and the occasional bar to help reach my goal. Plus I only have the bars 3x/week after a workout.

And just to clarify about the premier protein shake I was asking about...I'm not considering it as an addition to the powder AND bars, I want to have it in place of the bars. Also, I can't take my own shakes with me to work for after my workout because after just a few hours they become kind of clumpy and don't taste very good.

What I do is bring the powder with me in a small container. You can then just put that in your bag, pocket, or whatever and mix it in when you are ready. That way you avoid the clumping.

If you're using more ingredients, you can blend the cool ingredients (like if you're using banana or yogurt) and put them in a bottle on ice, then mix in your protein when you are ready to drink it.

@STEMJeff has given you a good option - if you mix the shake later in the day it wouldn't get clumpy and taste like garbage.. haha. Also, if you're having trouble getting enough food in, you can consider making shakes with things like oats, fruit/veges, peanut butter, protein powder, milk etc. for quick, convenient calories that won't fill you up as much 💪
