Right. My opinion: one of my goals for this year is to train in a very structured way. That means one month this routine and the next that routine. Three routines for the year. I know the rep range Im working in. I know the length of rest. I know the exercises.

Trust me: I ve been working out a long time with pathetic results. I think the reason is the lack of consistency. ANd you only get that consistency by following a plan. The micro-reason the progressive overload issue. The other, bigger reason is the motivation. When you track you ll know what to go for the week after.

When it comes to training in a spontaneous way: even though your muscles burn and you re all pumped you are not actually overloading the muscles every week. You are not progressing. You are just pumping. And hence muscle growth is sub-optimal.

Yet again I ve found over the years that motivation and fun are super important. And if the pumped feeling is what motivates you then go for that. Others may get motivated by increasing reps or weight each week.

Whatever gets you fired up the most is the best for you.

Amen.

Over and Out

Good post !

I agree with your points here. However I belive this comes down to how experienced the individual is. Take me for instance, I know what my body needs in order to grow, I have never gone an entire year without seeing gainz. Nevertheless not everyone will be able to do something like that. I think that the majority of people should follow a training plan that has been proved to work.

I would never improvise all my workouts over an extended period of time, about 1 month maximum. The reason for that is quite obvious, it is sub optimal (just like you said). Furthermore it is true that it is hard to know if you are doing the right work to overload the muscles. On the other hand shocking the body with improvised workouts over a small period of time could bring new gainz to the table.

The point with the experience is good. As is the point with the amount of time you may go for the spontaneous workout.

For the not so experienced a structure is important. If you know your body very well and are able to keep track of previous intensity in your memory then a short duration (one month is fine) then your style if fine. Of course it will shock the muscles as it is different (provididing it is intense also). Its always about changing also. I just saw that you are only 18. How long have you been lifting to know your body well? When I was your age I didnt know very much. The only thing that interested me was feeling pumped. But I am sure you are way beyond my level back then. Man, I wish I would have known more all those years. I would be huge now :-)))

You ll be fine.

You ll be fine.

I started with bodyweight exercises at 14. I did 100 push ups in one set by the age of 16, I got a sick six pack by the age of 15. I started lifting weights by the age of 16 (since that is the age limit to go the the gym around here). I have a father who has a lot of knowledge about the body. I have been a part of this site and Scott Herman's facebook page for a loooong time. This has allowed me to gain knowledge from a ton of informed people. And now I have becomed one of those informed people that Scott took in on the site to help others. Lastly, I workout about 4-6 times a week. Which allows me to find my limits and discover my level of experience through trial and error.

I do extended research on the body and workingout in general every single day. I have multiple books and goto websites / youtube channels. But most importantly I workout to learn and to gain experience, I do not "ego lift" and I know what to do to get the response I want from my body.

Moreover I have a lot of knowledge when it comes to nutrition and I did not start supplementing before the age of 18. This forced me to eat right or not get results.

I know I am very young to even consider saying that I know a lot about my body, but honestly I am confident when I say that I know my body very well. Mostly due to the fact that I am so eager to learn when it comes to all the biological facts about the human body. But also since I try out a lot of new things to see what happens to my body. For instance I took 1 entire month of lifting and did swimming three times a week instead. I became a far better swimmer and my back thickened up and my lats got stronger. I think it is mostly due to the fact that I am willing to try a lot of new things that I know my body very well.

I have tried jonnie candito's strenght program, I have tried bodybuilding programs, I have tried 5x5, I have tried mixing in Scott Herman's videos and make a routine, I have tried making my own routines ( which is what I mostly do now days), I have tried crossfit, I have tried curcuit training, brazilian jiu jitsu, kickboxing....and so on.....

My point being, that I simply LOVE learning about the human body and my own particularly.
