Looking really solid, John! Definitely something to aspire to for a "fellow 50 year old"! (actually I'll be 52 in July)

Just two questions : how does one (accurately) measure BF %..?? I have seen the "calipers" in various doctor's offices, but is that a REAL measurement? I always thought you have to be immersed in H2O or something to have a TRUE BF % taken? (or even a blood draw?)

And : Sorry to bring up a "bad moment" again, but were you deadlifting when you tore your bicep (switch grip?); I've read that this is a rather common injury when doing heavy weight on deads--supposedly MORE common that back injuries?!

I'm only lifting a month now, but I can see / feel changes already....and this forum has been a huge reason for that!

Harley

Harley,

Thanks Harley. And Yes, either water tank or a DEXA scan are the most accurate. Both are a bit expensive, though. Most people have access to calipers which are fairly accurate but the person taking the measurements needs to know what they are doing or the results will be all over the map. My BF is just an assumption based on many pics I have seen as well as feedback from other weight trainers.

As for the bicep, yes - it was a switch grip deadlift. I usually use lifting straps and do an overhand grip but that time I was trying to strengthen my grip and switch grip works best for me. Besides the bicep tear, I also tore off 2 caluses on my right hand which caused my grip to slip which is what led to the tear. Deadlifts are a great exercise and I still do them I just don't focus on the amount of weight anymore but more on the reps :-)

Thanks for the quick reply John!

About the bicep tear : I "guessed" that just from reading on-line and watching Youtube, so as a total "newbie" doing deadlifts I will stick with the overhand grip...better safe than sorry, especially just starting out! (as advised by my trainer)

Elliott has a video describing the "hook grip", which he claims will "add 50 lbs. to your deadlift"...not that I am personally ANYWHERE near caring about weight at my current level, but maybe for you it could be helpful?

Looks a bit painful, but it does make sense in terms of maintaining grip consistency / strength....

I sent (I admit, with a bit "forced" manner) my father to the gym few years ago at age little above 50. He had three "stupid" accidents with broken bones, nothing serious but they were there. That was the main reason. Weightlifting takes care for stronger bones (fighting osteoporosis), make your body more resistant by strengtening muscles and ligaments, stabilizing joints, helps to prevent losing muscle mass due to aging, etc.,... Then he found he swims and cycle much easier and comfortable than before. And now he is a gym freak :D Nothing serious, but always with smile on cruise from exercise to exercise at age of 63.

@jmboiardi, you don't look like ripped young men, but you look rock solid ;) thumbs up!

BR, Gregor

wow.. your father was awesome man! I wish my father could be a gym freak too. =D
