In 1988, I broke my back in a car accident. I was told by doctors that I wouldn't be strong, I wouldn't play sports, I would not work in strenuous professions. Well, they were full of shit, but I didn't figure it out until I wasted most of my teen years believing them. I started gaining strength and muscle mass through working out and later working in the airline freight business, but I wasn't healthy. Fast forward to 2012, I quit my job of 8 years, returned to college to finish a degree that I put on hold, and became a firefighter and EMT. I'm currently on a leave of absence from my graduate school program and working as a wildland firefighter, so now I'm working on fixings the damage I inflicted on myself from years of poor diet, lack of exercise, and smoking.
