Hey Nation,

I got a low blood sugar result today (60 mg/dL). Blood sugar below 70 mg/dL is considered low. Is this cause by my diet of high protein and avoiding sweets? Any harmful effect it may cause me? How should I get back to normal of my blood sugar at normal state. Thank you

Mike,

It wouldn't worry about it unless your doctor has concerns you may be pre-diabetic. When you eat a wholesome, nutritious diet and avoid sugar and simple and processed carbs, your body is very efficient in using insulin. You also won't have high blood glucose levels because your body is fully using the glucose you are giving it and your cells are not insulin resistant - like what happens when you eat too much simple and processed sugars and carbs. Insulin resistance causes your fasting glucose levels to elevate. Unless you are feeling lathargic, lack energy, and are in a mental fog, there is no need to try to boost your blood sugar. While this is a lower figure than "normal", this could just be the normal level for your body or may just be the reading the day you had the blood test but not your daily reading.

Sometimes these ranges of what is normal and not are a bit misleading. You need to remember what is considered "normal" is the bell curve distribution of ALL people - active, healthy, overweight, in-active, etc. Just like testosterone levels, The "normal" range is from 250 - 1110. What they don't tell you is 250 is normal for a 90 year old man and 1110 is normal for a teenager. If you are 30 and have a test level of 350, a doctor will tell you this is normal but a "normal" 30 year old should have testosterone levels in the 650-800 range.

So while 60mg is below the "normal" cut-off of 70mg, this may not be low for your body. Refer to this link below. I would still discuss with your doctor to make sure there isn't an underlying cause. If your blood sugar is consistently low, there may be a problem.

Low Blood Sugar

You will see that skipping meals, exercising too much, and eating less than normal can affect your blood sugar levels. Unless you have the symptoms listed, I wouldn't worry.

JOhn,

Thanks a lot.. its a very helpful information. Actually I didn't know if I'm diabetic or not, so better to see a doctor tomorrow. I'm expiriencing some symptoms like

  • blurry vision
  • weak
  • headache
  • hunger
  • sweating
  • difficulty sleeping

I never skip my meals, but the only thing in my mind is maybe I'm working out too much that most of the time not eating enough carbs after a workout.

Mike,

It is very possible you are pushing yourself too hard and not eating enough. I would be surprised if you are diabetic unless it runs in the family but even then poor nutrition is the triggering factor. Best to see a doctor and find out for sure :-)
