Yo Nation,

I'll try to make this less about me, and more 'general' - so it serves to help others who may find themselves in a similar situation... but that may be hard.

I wanted to ask for your advice, experience or tips on something that I find rather difficult: Achieving lean gains when your job is low activity - i.e. working in an office that has you sitting for 6-7 out of 8 hours a day.

Quick background of my day, typically (mon-fri):

6:30am, wake up. Eat Breakfast, out the door for 7:20am.

8:30am, I'm at work. (Commuting + 1.5km walk to get there).

10:30am, I typically have a snack and some green tea. Handfull of almonds or a protein bar / jerky.

12pm/12:30pm, Lunch.

3/4pm or, same-ish snacks as 10:30am.

5:30-6pm finish work.

6:30-6:45pm, home.

6:45/7:00, eat dinner. Wait around 30, have my Pre-Workout..i.e. C4/No.Xplode.. hit the gym as hard as I can.

Get home, usually follow up with a protein shake / some greek yoghurt or fruit. Go to bed to get 8 hours, repeat.

Basically, I have to consume the majority of my calories throughout my working day to try and hit my macros for lean gains.

I'm concerned with eating so many calories at work, whilst I'm sitting and doing nothing physically strenuous, as I feel that I'm just putting on fat. I mean, the worst part is that by the time I hit the gym that night, despite not really doing anything physically demanding, my energy levels aren't great. Even with pre-workout. There's also the fact that in order to actually get anything near 8 hours sleep, I have to go to the gym nearly immediately after eating, likely not giving my body adequate time to convert food into energy. (The energy levels bit is probably more from being mentally drained, but I guess that's something I need to work on myself)

Anyway, whether it's advice on what to snack on at work, whether I should be eating more post gym? Etc.

Cheers guys,

Dan

Daniel,

Being in Perth, are you in the oil and gas/energy industry? Anyways, to answer your questions. You are doing everything right and it looks like you have your nutrition and macros intact. I would try to get up and move around as much as you can during the day in the office. Sitting for long periods of time will not only eventually kill you but also offset some of the positive things you are doing with your nutrition and training.

Even if you get up every 15-30 minutes and walk around, get some water, go outside, go the bathroom, etc it will have a positive impact. Sitting all day will decrease your need for calories unless your workouts are very intense and you have appreciable EPOC (Exercise Post Oxygen Consumption) which leads to continual calorie burn for up to 6-8 hours after your workout. Sitting also kills your posture, weakens your core, and lowers your testosterone levels. That is why it is important to try to stand up and move around as much as possible as every little bit helps :-)

Yeah I like John's suggestion of getting up every now and then to just move around a little bit.

However, also remember that as long as you are eating the calories you need (either for maintenance, fat loss or muscle gain), and you are still working out consistently, then your body will use those calories accordingly. Don't forget you do burn calories doing the simplest things, and you obviously need a certain number to go about daily life.

If you're feeling tired before the gym...well, that is a tough one. Just need to find a way to get that kick of energy, whether it be by finding some food that will kick start you along with your pre-workout, or some kind of motivation before you hit the gym.
