Best 12 Wk Program for Summer Ready Body?

    January 6, 2019, 12:05 am

    Hey Scott,

Thanks for all the great content and helping so many people get fit.  I've been inconsistent in the gym for years.  Sometimes I'm training 4-5 days a week for a few months then I'll fall off and I'm out of the gym for 2 months.

Basically, I'm no stranger to good form and different exercisizes.  I wouldn't call myself a beginner but I don't have the physique I want.  My main goal is to LOOK my best by summertime.  Which program would you recommend.  My initial thought is to do the 5 Day Body Building Split program.  I'm 130lbs around 20% body fat.

    Thanks!

@joshtan Well if you need to cut some body fat for summer, you might be better with the PPL program. Although you could stick with the 5 Day split and just throw in some extra cardio and maybe a HIIT circuit once or twice a week.

You'll probably need to be in a deficit if getting shredded is your main goal. You could easily get your body fat % down to 10 - 12% well before summer starts. So you could probably even have a couple of months before summer to lean bulk!

Scott, I infer from your answer that both prorams can achieve the same goal. What is it about the cardio and HIIT circuits that makes the difference?

Should I calculate my deficit from my active BMR (from your calculator) of 2400kcal/day?

@joshtan Well the HIIT circuits and cardio are going to help you burn more calories making it easier to lose fat. But also, doing HIIT workouts (either circuits or just HIIT cardio) can help your body actually burn through energy for longer during the day, even after you've finished working out. Which is again good for fat loss! So the 5 Day Body Building split doesn't have any HIIT circuits included, but if you wanted that split while trying to lose fat, you can easily add some in.

And yes calculate your deficit from your BMR in motion. If your BMR in motion is 2400 calories then aiming for 2200 or 2100 calories would be a good number to start your cut.
