Hey Scott!

So I have a pretty different work schedule and was hoping for some advice on my times of day I should work out. I am a Police Officer and work 1pm to 11pm throughout my work week with a rotating schedule. Some weeks I'm off M-T-W, the next week I'll be off T-W-TH, and so on week by week and month by month. Right now I am doing a mixture of whatever works best for my daily schedule by working out after I get off at 11pm and getting home and asleep by 1 or 2 Am. Some days though depending on my schedule I will get up and hit the gym around 7 or 8 am and then head in to work that afternoon.

Will rotating my workout times hurt my gains? Is working out at 11pm at night not beneficial because I've been out on the streets in the heat working all day and not able to get a decent post workout meal? What kinda structure would you suggest given the job field and time restrictions?

Thanks

Joe

Hey Joe!

I don't think changing your workout times would have too much impact really. It might to an extent if your pre-workout meals are always changing, and your body has to train some days with food in your system, and some days without it, but other than that, if you get on a schedule where you always work out at certain times on different days, it would be OK and your body would probably adjust to the differences.

But having a set time is probably better, if you can manage it. I don't think it would matter between night and morning to be honest - I'm guessing in the morning you don't have a pre-workout meal? So not having one at night wouldn't matter either. But I think a post-workout meal is important.. so if you can't get that at night, morning might be your best option.

Plus, if you go in the morning, it's done and out of the way early, and you don't have to worry about feeling sluggish after work, or convincing yourself that you're too tired to go either.
