Hey,

this might be the most uncommon question but still I want to ask it.

So in order for me to go to the university, I had an eye surgery because previously I needed strong glasses.

I need to perform really soon, and even tho I feel like I am in shape, I still would like to take supplements regurarly.

However, the doctor who did the surgery said that it is forbidden to take any supplements for 6 months after the event. When I asked why, she couldnt come up with any answer, just said no. So now after I tried examining the question via internet, and I still didnt find anything useful regarding the topic, I would like to ask if anyone has any experience and/or have encountered such situation before.

(When I asked about training, she said its allowed after a week of rest, which already passed)

Hey Chris. I've never had any experience with it myself so it's hard for me to give you a completely accurate answer. But here's the thing.. why do you need supplements right now? And what supplements do you think you need? What is it you need to 'perform' for? Supplements are only there to fill gaps - to SUPPLEMENT your diet.

If there's a risk of some supplements messing up your recovery, it's not really worth it, is it? You might want some protein to make sure you're getting enough daily.. but that would be about it, and for now, you might just have to focus on increasing your normal food intake to get your protein count from whole food if you can. Save the supplements for later.

Here is my view:

I had eye surgery over the summer last year. I too had to wait at least 7-10 days before I could train again. As for your supplement question, most doctors have little knowledge or understanding of things not taught in medical school or that come from a pharmaceutical company. Many unregulated supplements like Gingko Biloba and Ginseng have caused adverse effects and even death in some people. The issue here is changes in blood pressure as these herbs as well as any stimulant supplements raise blood pressure which is very bad after eye surgery. This is why you can not train for at least 7-10 days after surgery. The capillaries in your eyes are very small and large fluctuations in blood pressure can damage them.

For doctors, the term "supplements" is a voodoo term and means "all unregulated substances that people take and can cause harm or death". I theorize that your eye doctor has an opinion that lumps all supplements - good or bad - into one bucket and thus she advises against their use. This viewpoint is due to the high litigation rate in the U.S. where doctors get sued for everything. Because supplements are not FDA regulated, she will not advise their use in the off chance you have a post surgical problem and then blame her for what happened.

Traditional supplements like vitamins and protein powders are fine.

Hey,

Well I was talking about traditional supplements like creatine or protein. English is not my native, but if anyone misunderstood and thought that I ask about steroids or something, then I apologise, I would never take that pointless garbage.

Well what I need to perform for, here is a little story about it.

I dont live in the U.S

I want to be a police officer - after highschool they didnt accept me due to my vision which was really bad.

I then started to work in order to save up enough money to pay for the surgery - I dont know what the method is called in english, but I think its the same - PRK.

What I need to train for are several physical tests. Last year I was successful with them, but since I work I barely get any free time to eat, especially when Im working. Its a light physical job, but still increases my need of calories. So I thought if I dont even get enough pause to eat when Im in, I thought I may have enough time to drink a protein shake when I work.

I've been training for almost 1.5 years now. Since I dont take any supplements right now, I increased my input from natural food but then again after 10-12 hours of work, where I cant even eat normally, the needed input is just too much to devour at once. (For me at least)

Could you please tell me more about your surgery method?

Thanks in advance.

I definitely didn't think you meant steroids. It sounds like John has a bit more experience in the matter so it sounds like you can go with the typical protein, vitamin supplements etc.

I see what you mean about wanting to get food in at a cheaper and easier rate. Still try to make sure you get a good amount of your calories from whole food where you can and just use supplements to fill some gaps, you don't want to be overly reliant on them.

I'd also maybe even go back to your doctor and actually tell her what supplements you were meaning and see if that changes her response when she has a clearer idea of what you're looking to take. Hope that helps and I'll let John take it from here with his experience which should be more helpful.

Chris,

I know you did not mean steroids. For doctors, supplements are a grey area because they are not regulated or controlled by government oversight. As such, doctors are hesitant to recommend the use of any supplements after procedures like surgery. Using creatine and protein should be fine unless you have other issues like liver or kidney problems that using creatine or excess protein would make worse.

For me, I had to have an ocular injection (needle in the eye) of an anti-vascular growth factor to reduce some leakage in one of the branches of my occular vein due to a slight blockage. Due to injecting a drug into my eye, the doctor did not want me lifting for 7 days so as to not increase occular pressure and expose me to potential infection from germs at the gym. After 1 week, the eye stabilizes and the needle hole is completely closed thus protecting against possible infection.
