Hello friends,

I just wanted to have a quick opinion from more expert people. Recently I got very tired of counting calories and, honestly, found myself a little bit in need of "comforting food". You know, when you eat just for the pleasure of eating even if you know you don't need it.

I was wondering: how would it work if one was to follow a Paleo Diet (no grains no dairy, lots of vegetables, meat, fruits) to not having to count calories all the time?

They claim that fat gain is very hard under these conditions, since the majority of carbs come from fruits and your are not like to drink one liter of olive oil to get fat.

Since I don't crave quality but quantity of food (expecially fruit) do you think that such uncontrolled diet (in terms of quantity) would be a key to disaster?

Sorry if I sounded too "newbie" in my considerations, thanks for your time in providing your opinions!

Ezio,

There is no magic diet or eating style that will prevent weight gain. If calories in exceeds calories out regardless of where those calories come from, one will gain weight including body fat. Paleo eliminates grain and dairy and it works because it forces the body into a moderate form of Ketosis. Ketosis is when the body's cell switch from burning glucose for energy (from carbs) to burning ketone bodies derived from the metabolism of fats. Carbs also hold a lot of water hence the name carboHYDRATES, so some of the weight loss is water when carbs are dramatically reduced or eliminated altogether. Ketosis is not a healthy state to be in for prolonged periods of time. Moderate complex and fibrous carb consumption is better for the long term.

While fruits and vegetables do contain carbs, they also contain a lot of fiber which slows down the absorption of the sugars from the food into the bloodstream. This is why you want to eat whole fruits and avoid fruit juice. That being said, this does not mean that one can eat as much fruit as they want and not worry about total calorie intake and weight gain because they are not eating a lot of carbs and diary. Whoever is touting this nonsense is mis-informed and doesn't understand human biology.

Eating food out of pleasure versus need is a slippery slope. While it brings enjoyment, you are basically feeding the body extra calories it really doesn't need or want. If these extra calories fall within the daily limit, no weight will be gained. If they are in excess of your daily caloric needs, you will gain weight. The amount and type of weight gained will depend on how much above your daily needs it goes. 250-500 calories over maintenance will be used to fuel muscle growth. 500+ and the risk of these calories being converted to body fat goes up exponentially.
