This weeks Tuesday Tune-Up was all about LEGS!! Many of you asked how I am able to squat so deep with a narrow stance. Well, it all comes down to flexibility. This video will help you increase your flexibility to ensure you are getting the most out of your squats!

A good suggestion for anyone that wants to deepen their squats (after stretching of course) is to lighten the weight and work on going as deep as you can, while making sure your knees don't go over your toes. Once the knees go over the toes, you set up your knees for injuries at heavier weights. No one likes to squat light, but I guarantee if you go light and go all the way down, you will feel it the next day for sure!

Yea great tip Michelle!

In the video I actually talk about keeping a light weight on the bar and going into the DOWN position to see where it feels most comfortable to position your feet.

Got to go light to do it right sometimes! #HTH #SHFAthlete

I was going low-ish on my squats before, but knew I wasn't really getting close to going ASS-TO-GRASS. After watching MAXIMUM GROWTH! LEGS! I realised that if I want to be seeing the best gains, I need to be doing full ROM and slow negatives. After utilising some of the stretches in your other video, I made sure when doing legs yesterday that I went as low as I could, really aiming for ASS-TO-GRASS. Yes, I had to reduce the weight, but I could definitely feel the burn in my quads by going lower!! The only thing is I struggle with keeping my heels on the ground when squating and really have to focus hard on keeping them flat and my chest out and back straight. Will improving my flexibility help with that over time, and make it easier to go low with proper form?

For the more advanced lifters (5+ years of lifting) who have consistently done barbell squats, you could try using the Smith Machine. I know this device is either praised or villified but I get a good hit doing ATG deep squats in it. They keys are flexibility, NEVER letting your knees go over your toes, and proper form. I say for people with 5+ years of training because it is critical to build quads and proper form, balance, and stabilizers with barbell squats in the first 5 years of lifting. After liffting as long as I have and training alone, the Smith Machine meets my squatting goals now.

Alright. Went in and did my thing today. Leg day! Thought I'd check out your advice on deep squats and dropped my squats from 315lbs to 205lbs. Felt freaking awesome! Was wondering if my form looked okay or not? Not exacly ass to grass but definately lower than normal. Makes we wonder if I was actually going parallel like I thought with 315lbs. Guess I'll know tomorrow!

I have been training coming up on 6 years and have made some great gainz. I've done a lot of trial and error on myself as well as learned from others and through research online. I've come along way in strength and size since I've started. I will continue to learn and make myself better each day. Joe,

It will absolutely help with improving your flexibility and proper form. I love squatting with no shoes on too. Weird right? but I feel I can keep my heels in place much better than with shoes on. Try going a bit lower in weight if you are struggling keeping your heels down. Once your muscles memorize proper form, going up in weight will be no problem

I didn't actually mean that I squat with no shoes on, I've never actually tried that haha. I think by lowering the weight when I did squats the other day I did find it easier to keep my heels on the ground with proper form. Practice makes perfect I suppose!

Looking much better! But what I notice is that you fall forward a bit as you go down. Really focus on keeping your chest up and try to lower the weight a little more just until you get the form down perfect.

Nice man!

Thanks! It sure does feel so much better going farther down. Guess my Ego got in the way a little.

Hey bud, take advantage of the fact that you've got safety racks at your gym and really work the depth as your main priority! Strength comes from full range of motion and dedication to technique, so if you are able to work in some more mobility training to your hips and lower body you'll be able to ATG in no time!
