Hello guys,

I am trying to build muscle at the moment, but I am one of those guys that don't eat much. Here's an example: Yesterday I had oatmeal for breakfast, Greek yogurt for lunch and one chicken breast with some rice for dinner. Some of the people I know tell me to forget that Greek yogurt even exists. I don't think that's a tremendous amount of food, but I might be wrong. I don't think that eating less will take me far, but that's just my opinion. I've always liked Greek yogurt, but... I would just like to hear your words of wisdom, guys.

Thank you for your time.

Greek yoghurt usually is a snack if you dont have it in huge portions of course. Those three meals sound very little for someone trying to build muscle though, have you thought about changing it up ?

It takes a while to get your appetite used to having a larger intake. I used to live on one meal of a few chicken tenders at lunch and a sandwich at night.
It is absolutely possible to live on that few calories, I've been there. However, you need to start giving your body the nutrients it needs in order to build muscle.

I was at ~1200-1500 kcals and I have a super fast metabolism, so that was absolutely nothing. However, made it my goal to hit 2000 kcals every day. (sometimes with protein shakes, sometimes with bars, sometimes with Orange juice and cake. Just any way you can, set yourself up for a calory goal).

Later that went up to 2500, then 3000, now I'm eating ~3000-3500 kcals/day and I could easily down 5000 (my cheat days easily go over 5000 and I'm not even trying). However, once you get your appetite working and you are eating a lot more than you used to, try to eat clean and count macros. It makes no sense to clean up your diet if you're downing 1500 kcals/day. Since you're not eating enough to gain mass. Get your body used to more and more food every day just like you would progressively overload your muscles, but do it with your digestive system.

Also know that liquid calories are the BEST way to up your calories without feeling super bloated all day because they fill you up for only a little bit of time.

Thank you guys. I neglected to mention that I don't eat chocolate, muffins, cupcakes, cookies, etc. At all. I think the problem's in my head and my approach is simply wrong. I do eat clean. Nothing fat, sweet, etc. However I am afraid of putting on a lot of unnecessary weight and by that I mean fat. I am open to suggestions.

William, how much yogurt is too much for you? I know some people eat 2-3 yogurts a day and they are fine. I couldn't eat that, though.

Yeah 2-3 is fine assuming we are talking about small containers. Also why are you eating so clean ? Its gonna be pretty hard to put on muscle if you eat only clean foods, especially if you have a fast metabolism. I eat 1-2 pizzas a week, usually also have chocolate and some candy, I also like cookies and donuts and im at about 10% BF right now, maybe even 9 %. I have actually lost 0.5 - 1 % BF these last 2-3 weeks because I am training everyday, but im still eating a fair amount of "dirty food".

Dont get me wrong, I dont want you to eat pizza everyday. Im just saying that it helps a lot with overall calories which is what you need to gain muscle: A caloric surpluss

Do you know your bodyfat ? Do you know exactly how much calories you are eating ?

In terms of body fat percentage, I think we are pretty much in the same boat. That's why I am trying to gain muscle. I only have a 4-pack, not a 6-pack. I will look into that. Why do I eat so clean? At the moment I live in the countryside and a lot of the stuff is homegrown. Potatoes, onions, etc. I also buy milk from my neighbor, which is probably a good thing. It's 100% natural. I work out every day too. My workouts are pretty intense but only 1 hour long. I have to admit I am still pretty green, as I used to be a runner/cyclist. I've been thinking of eating pancakes once or twice a week, but I don't know if that's a good idea. Plain flour, milk and eggs. How bad could that be? One or two pancakes for breakfast won't kill me. I am don't know exactly how many calories I take in a day, but obviously not nearly enough. I sometimes feel like a really overweight teenager who's trying to lose weight and that's definitely not the case here. :D

I used to have the same concerns. I thought a bulk (gaining mass) meant necessarily gaining a lot of fat because you go into a cut afterwards.

That's why I decided to take it slow and up my calories in small steps. I'm eating over double of what I used to eat and I've still got that sweet 4-pack, but now on top of that I've got bigger muscles all around and I'm getting way stronger.

Take it slow if you want, but definitely start controlling what goes into your body, but don't be afraid to cheat a little and have some fun with iifym

I could try and eat more veggies and chicken. I don't think I want to eat crisps, chcolate, cakes, etc. For some reason I am being too strict.

Wow, sounds amazing ! Getting fresh milk and food like that must be amazing ! Sounds like you are in a good BF range. Yeah start eating those pancakes and eat more food everyday for easier muscle gain.

My suggestion is to try it, dont need to eat crisps and that, rather try to eat more calorie dense foods like pizza. I know it sounds crazy to advice someone to eat more "dirty" but with as little food as it seems you are eating you need the calories. Even the brain uses tons of calories, and the body and its functions uses calories. You are not gonna have enough left over to build the muscle.

Defo try and eat more chicken and veggies. My advice would be: start eating one more meal every 2-3 weeks untill you are eating 6 meals a day.

I will try my hardest, William. I forgot to tell you that the Greek yogurt comes in 400g plastic jars. I don't know if that's a lot. I normally eat one a day, but I do agree that I need to focus more on foods that will facilitate my growth. Yeah, I am in that BF range at the moment. Rabbit and fish are also very good options. Neither is too expensive here as there are a lot of farmers/fishermen in my area. I will look into that too. I am not very experienced, so I really don't want to put on excess weight, but I will do my best.
