Supplements are designed to supplement a diet and training regime! They are most certainly not to be used as replacements for food.

When buying supplements it is important not to go overboard and buy them just because they have pretty packaging and look cool when your mates come round. Here are 3 things to consider when buying supplements:

  • Are they truely supplementing your diet and training?
  • Do you actaully know the effects of the ingredients and therefore how and when to take them?
  • Are they proven to work?

You must buy supplements based on your fitness/health goals. Here are a list of supplements I use and why:

  • Omega 3 fish oils - aid fat loss and muscle gowth, improve insulin sensitivity and metabolism, decreases inflammation which can enhance body composition. They also have various health benefits such as lowering blood pressure and your overall cardiovascular risk profile.
  • Carnitine - aids fat loss, improves athletic performance by improving energy systems, increases motivation, male fertility, insulin sensitivity and enhances recovery. Take Omega 3 with carnitine to really enhance fat loss.
  • Whey Protein - Improves body composition by gaining muscle a burning fat (due to the increase in protein consumption), can suppress your appetite, can improve insulin sensitivity.
  • Multivitamin - I only take a multivitamin as an insurance if I don't get the required micronutrients from food. There are numerous health benefits to vitamins and minerals.
  • ZMA - Enhances recovery and increases anabolic hormone levels especially testosterone.
  • Aminotaur (BCAAs) - enhance protein synthesis, correlate with improved body composition, result in a better testosterone to cortisol ratio, can decrease muscle soreness
  • Leucine - Leucine is a BCAA that enhances the muscle building pathway more so than other BCAAs. It is important that you take leucine with other BCAAs for the optimal anabolic response.
  • Creatine - enhances atletic performance and strength and has a positive correlation between increasing muscle size and fat loss.

Great post Daniel.

I would say that is one of the top 10 questions we get asked.  "What should I take for...."

If you don't have any idea what your daily macros / calories are, then you have no business with supplements. Like you said, they need to SUPPLMENT your workout.

For example... how do you know if you need a whey protein, or a casein protein if you don't know how much protein you are eating to begin with.  Better yet, BSN SYNTHA-6 when comepared to SYNTHA-6 ISOLATE has more carbs, fat, and calories.  If you don't know the gaps int he numbers of what needs to be filled in your macros, you might choose the wrong supplement.

For me, I get most of my macros from food, so I stick with the SYNTHA-6 ISOLATE because it is less carbs, fat, and calories than the regular SYNTHA-6.

Looks like we take a lot of the same stuff.  Currently I take Fish Oil and Multivitamin (Vitamin Shoppe Brand) and use BSN AMINO-X, CELL MASS, and SYNTHA-6 ISOLATE.

Don't need much when you are eating right! #HTH

Amen brother!   They should include the definition of "supplement" on the label.

It is better to get your Omega 3's from eating fish than taking pills.  Regardless of what they claim, your body absorbs it better from natural sources and the bioavailability is better than pills. :-)

This was very informative man. I really want to start eating fish so I can get the Omega 3's. What would you guys say is the best kind of fish to eat? I've never eaten sea food so I don't really know what to look for.

Joey,

Salmon, tuna, and sardines have the highest. All oily fish, as Daniel said, are high in Omega 3's. The top dog is Salmon. Since you are in the U.S., you will have access to fresh Alaskan salmon and farmed salmon. Alaskan is the best and most expensive. There is great debate about farmed versus wild salmon as far as Omega 3 content, protein content, and pollutants and PCB's. The bottom line is Salmon is so good for you that the benefits far outweigh the risks. Farmed salmon is more affordable. If that is all you can afford or have access to, then that is what you should eat.

Tuna is high in mercury because it is a top tier predator that eats many types of fish but that is more an issue for pregnant women and children so eating tuna regularly (canned or fresh) is fine. Sardines have the lowest mercury and environmental pollutants due to their size. If you can stand the smell and like the taste, they are also a great choice.
