Hi Nation,

Recently, I have wanted to start going ATG on squats. For some reason, I can't seem to perfrom this technique. I'm not sure if my body mechanics are wrong. I have been hitting legs for years, so I do have strength in my legs. I have watched Scotts videos on how to do it, but I am still having issues.

Right now, with no weight added, I can not do it. When I try, I either fall backwards on my butt or my heals have to come off the ground completely. I am flexible, so I do not think that is the issue. I was wondering if they way some people's body mechanics work, they just can't do it. If y'all could provide any tips on how to do it, I would greatly appreciate.

I was thinking that maybe glute strength has something to do with it. I am more of a Quad dominate person.

Let me know if y'all have any tips, I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks,

Wesley

Wesley,

Sounds more like a hip and ankle flexibility issue. When squatting ATG, it is critical to maintain a neutral spine. You also need to choose between a high bar and a low bar placement. Personally, I use a low bar as it keeps your center of gravity more over your hips and quads than high bar and doesn't strain your neck. Bar placement is a matter of personal preference and despite the sometime debates it creates I think both are equally effective in developing the legs.

As for a neutral spine, you may need to lean a bit forward more to keep your balance as you descend. Some people like Franco Colombu could do ATG squats with practically a vertical spine while Arnold needed to lean forward more at an angle (while still maintaining a neutral spine) to do ATG as he was taller than Franco. You are 6' tall so you may need to lean a bit more forward to keep from falling backwards. Even though you lean forward, you still need to push from your heels not your toes.
