Quality of supplements

Are cheaper supplements still good quality?

Hi,

I'm looking to purchase some supplements, so I read up on this article so decided to look for Creatine, BCAA's, Fish Oils and Beta Alanine. Firstly I looked at BSN, however their prices are fairly expensive for small amounts; whereas I can get 2-3x the amount for similar prices from MyProtein. I have used MyProtein before for Whey Protein amongst other things, but can anyone comment on the quality of their products?

Will the potential decrease in quality affect my training/results?

Currently I am in a large caloric defecit maintaining a high protein intake (40% protein, 20% fat, 40% carbs) to build a small amount of muscle while losing fat. I'm 21, 5'7 and weigh around 70kg. I eat around 1300-1400 calories per day as I want to lose fat as my main goal. In the past 2 months I have kept a strict diet and strict weightlifting routine and been able to shed fat and put on a fairly substantial amount of muscle.

Once I have dropped down to a low body fat % I plan to maintain lean gains (as Scott preaches!) so eating in a 250-500 caloric surplus.

Any information would be greatly appreciated,

Cheers

Craig,

The bottom line is you get what you pay for. If you can get 5 Lbs of a supplement for $20, the quality, purity, and effectiveness will be very suspect. It is your body and your training goals so like your health don't skimp on supplements. Consumer Reports recently did a review of many supplement companies' protein powders in the U.S. The results were staggering. Many of them were tainted with heavy metals and other pollutants. Many did not have quality ingredients or the amount listed on the label was not consistent with their analysis of the product. Optimum Nutrition (which is also owned by the same company that owns BSN) came out as one of the top brands for quality, purity, and consistency.

If it were me, I would spend the extra cash to get a quality supplement instead of a cheap one that will only benefit the quality of your urine :-)
