Hello everyone! I wanted to write this post on 1,3 Dimethylamylamine HCL (DMAA) which was an ingredient found in a few thermogenics and pre workout products. DMAA is actually considered a drug and there is debate on its origin. Some say it is derived from geranium oil while others say it is synthetically made in laboratories. I want to discuss the history on DMAA and see what all of you think about this drug.

First I want to explain a little bit about this drug and what it has been used for. In the past DMAA has been used for…

  • ADHD
  • Weight loss
  • Body Building
  • Improving Athletic Performance
  • Appetite suppressant

This is the reason why DMAA landed in some thermogenics and pre workout products in the dietary supplement stores. It helps people have more energy, stay focused, elevates mood, and fires up the metabolism. Some of these products were OxyElite Pro, Jack3d, Lean Body, and several others. To date you can no longer find this ingredient in these products or any other products sold in the US. I used to take OxyElite Pro and saw the formula changed which sparked my curiosity as to why.

It had been reported that two military personals died and in their system was DMAA. I did some research on these deaths, and the two that died had taken 4-6 times the dosage allowed. The actual death report stated they died from a heat stroke. The exact reason of death isn’t important to me, because knowing these personals took way more than the recommend dose goes to show they were not following the label. Anyone can take more of something then they should and suffer the side effects. I do not think the FDA should punish these companies for someone else being irresponsible.

This brings me to the next topic. Should the government have more control over dietary supplements, or should we as consumers be more informed and take action to do our own research. I personally look up a product before I buy it and become familiar with the ingredients on the label. I also make sure I follow exactly what the label says and I do not exceed the dosage. I took OxyElite Pro and will say it helped me a lot. I got an extra boost of energy from it and noticed a difference in my workouts. I did not feel it was an extreme rush or something dangerous to take.

A lot of consumers are saying the new formula sucks without DMAA in it, and that the products just are not the same. What do you guys think nation? Do you think DMAA should be banned from dietary supplements? Do you think the government should have control over all the ingredients? Have any of you taken products containing DMAA? How many of you check labels and does research on products before you buy them?

I just want to get some feedback on this topic and specifically DMAA. I hope this helped everyone understand what DMAA is, and most importantly I hope it ignited some thinking on products you buy and the role the government plays in those products. Lastly, remember to be consumer smart, do all your own research, and do not take what you hear and read as the complete truth.

Very interesting and was nice that you already had quite a bit of information on it, I liked that.

Without doing my own research into it it's hard to say, so I'm going off the knowledge you gave, which isn't really enough to say for sure whether it should be banned or not...However, regardless of whether it was produced in a lab or is organic, I think that is irrelevant and should be personal opinion (always people who are organic on all things and those who don't care). As for if it was lethal or not as a reason for banning it, I think that would need further study, two scenarios where they overdosed and that wasn't even the labled COD, doesn't really make a case. So maybe do some more studies on the effects it can have, and then slap a warning on it saying it contains DMAA and it should be fine in my opinion.

As for governmental control, that's a very political thing which I'll shy away from cause you're going to get your hard core people on both sides and then people in the middle like me. Unless it comes to atheletic performance enhancing like steroids (for baseball, football, body building, whatever) I don't think it matters. If you're old enought to make your own decisions you're old enough to be responsible for the rammifications of your actions, as long as the only person you're going to hurt is yourself, I say it's your choice.

I've never used anything with DMAA in it, but I do read my labels, mostly cause I'm interested in things. I may start doing research on the things I'm taking too just out of curiosity, but as of now I buy what looks good or what I've been recommended.

Hope that answers everything satisfactorily lol.

Personal experience.

That was a very good point you made about organic or lab produced, because we all have that same choice today and everyone makes a different choice. I dont think it is lethal really at all, but at high dose it obviously can cause problems like many things at high doses. I agree they should at least put a warning on it and let people make the decision they are going to make. I do think doing some research would be of benefit. Just because there are so many products on the market, and actually looking at reviews can soemtimes be the most help. I always go on amazon and check the reviews for a product Im considering buying. Thanks for the input! Definitely brought up some good points to add to the post!

Is this the chemical involved in the Rob Riches scandal from him taking Craze from Designer Labs?

I think the FDA needs to take a more active role monitoring and controlling supplements because people think if it is natural it is 100% safe at ANY dosage.  This is why you are reading about people dying from taking too much of a supplement.  Opium is natural, Nicotine is natural, Caffeine is natural.  We all know what happens when you use too much, or in the case of Opium, abuse it and the other "supplements" derived from it - heroin, morphine, codeine.  Supplements fly under the radar of FDA scrutiny and it usually isn't until someone dies that action is taking.  The supplement industry has lots do lobbyists in Washington looking to prevent Congress from passing laws to allow the FDA more power over supplements.  I believe this needs to change and that the FDA should have the power to regulate, and if necessary, ban supplements.  I am not saying supplements are bad and people shouldn't use them.  I am saying they have the potential to harm you if used wrong of it how it is manufactured is not monitored to make sure the chemicals inside are as advertised.  Some supplement companies use banned compounds and slightly change their chemical structure to skirt the ban purely for profit. This is irresponsible and dangerous without some sort of oversight.  Unfortunately, we live in a world where some people are stupid and irresponSible.  We need laws and agencies to protect the general public.

Such a great post Jennifer.  I remember when all this went down and yes the people who died took WAYYYY more than the recommended dosage.  That coupled with probably not drinking enough water or eating will for sure cause death.  I think one of them may have already had some sort of heart issue too.  Either way, very sad :(

As far as government regulation.  This isn't the first time.  Something similar was happening with ephedrine.  I used to use a few products in the past like RIPPED FORCE and it had ephedrine in it and it was AMAZING!  When it was banned you could tell a clear difference in energy /  performance.  But people were overdosing on ephedrine and ruined it for everyone else.

I don't personally think the government should interfere with MY decisions... however, as far as the majority of the population.. well.. that might be another story.  and I don't mean that in a condescending way, I am just not blind to the fact that most America ARE overweight and are not educated on proper diet and nutrition (which is why I started SHF) so they think everything on the shelf at the store is "safe" and don't have to read the label.  In America we think MORE is better.  I just hope deaths from pre-workouts never happen again and consumers become more aware as to what they are putting in their bodies.

I agree with you completely on this. The supplements did work great, but when used unproperly can cause problems. So for people like us that know to educate ourself and have it is okay, but most of the people do not do this. It does suck being punished if you will for other peoples actions, but it seems a lot of situations go that way. You are so right people do think more is better when that isnt always the case, and people will buy anything that claims to give them the desired results without looking more into that product. I just wish there was a better way to control this without banning products. Perhaps the people selling these products need to be more educated and have to explain everything to the consumer before purchasing it. Or have people read and sign something before buying a product. I know this is a very different idea, but it could help keep products on the shelf and those that purchase these products more safe and educated. Thanks for the input!
