When i do the incline bench press and lifted the bar up from its resting position, this caused some pain around my shoulders (AC joint) and around the side of my arms. I noticed two points:

1. My arms have to be wider to lift the bar up (the height from the bench to the bar isnt a lot). This adds pressure to my shoulders (mainly my left shoulder) which eventually caused some pain.

2. If my arms are narrower on the bar, then i feel more pressure around my elbow joints, to lift the bar from its resting position.

Once i have the bar raised, i dont find any difficulties until the next time i have to raise the bar from the bench.

So i have seen a few videos on doing the incline/flat bench press and dont think im doing anything wrong but one point i noticed on nearly all the videos i watched, was the user who was performing the exercise had enough room between the bench and the bar where their arms were close to being fully extended (mine are no where close to fully extended) and wondered if this would be a sign for me purchasing a new bench, perhaps one that is more taller? If yes what do you recommend in terms of height that i should be looking for?

Edit: I couldnt change the title from Advise to Advice

Hey @EssCee.

It could be that you are actually using a bench which is too high to perform the incline bench. The higher/steeper your incline, the more front delt engagement you are going to get.

Is it an adjustable bench that you are using? If so, I suggest lowering the incline so it is at a smaller incline/degree. If the bench is not adjustable, you might need to look at getting one.

Thanks Joe

The bench is adjustable and the next setting to lower the bench means its set for a flat bench :-). I have it set on the second height available out of the three given. If I place it any higher I wouldn't be able to squeeze my body beneath the bar.

thanks
