I've been trying to find a routine for abs to do at home, but haven't been able to find many exercises that don't cause strain on my lower back. Back problems run in my family, so I want to be a little cautious. I started with the common exercises like crunches or leg lifts but was feeling it in my back more than in my abs. I even tried sticking a pillow underneath me (Scott's "Ab Pillow" trick), but it didn't help. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Background info about me for context: I'm pretty new to all this. I know the importance of properly exercising the core, but when I got started, I was deterred by the strain on my lower back.

If some of those still cause your lower back problems, try doing some hanging ab exercises if you have access to a bar - like the windshield wiper, toe-2-bar, or hanging knee raises to name a few.

As for your back, if problems run in the family, have you seen a doctor about it? They might be able to recommend some massaging or foam rolling along with general stretching to aleviate the pain.

Hope this helps!

I sometimes have the same issue of a lot of ab exercises causing pain in my lower back. I'm not an expert, this is all just my opinion, but personally I try to concentrate on really good form with a stright back. But also some exercises that I've found easier are any form of crunch. An alternate to leg raises are doing the same movement with bent knees and bringing them to your temple and focusing on contracting your abs. (shown in one of Mike Chang's YouTube videos....just ignore his sometimes annoying personality...lol).
