Hello MS members!
I've been training for about a year now and i've seen a good amount of results since I first started. But whenever I flex in the mirror I can see that my right triceps is seemingly bigger then my left. Its the same with biceps, but when I put it to the test with single arm exercises like dumbell curl or single arm overhead tricep extension I can do the same amount of weight for the same amount of repetitions with really no problems at all. I feel the burn but dont see the development, though I know the strenght is there. So is this genetics, undervelopment or is it something else? It really bothers me because it makes it feel as though the time I spend in the gym training my arms is only giving me 50% of the results that I'm supposed to have.

Check out this video my man!

I have been training coming up on 6 years and have made some great gainz. I've done a lot of trial and error on myself as well as learned from others and through research online. I've come along way in strength and size since I've started. I will continue to learn and make myself better each day. Watch the video thats posted, its a really good one ! One year into training ain't much so you will be able to fix this with just training normally. If this however becomes worse then you need to work on your mind to muscle connection, because then it is likely that you have a better connection with one side. Furthermore you could do some extra reps on the side that is lagging behind.

Danny,

Trust me......this happens with everyone. First off, nobody is 100% symmetrical despite how they look in person or in pictures. Second, it is normal that the more dominate side may have quicker development than the non-dominate side but our genetics are programmed to grow evenly and symmetrically when natural. Drugs alter this and affect this symmetry more than growing naturally which is why most enhanced bodybuilders look odd.

I have been lifting for 32 years now and I am still convinced my right pec is smaller than my left, my right tricep is smaller than my left, and my lats aren't even. Nobody sees this but me. The only true symmetrical discrepency I now have is that my left bicep short head is now shorter than my right bicep after I tore it 2 years ago deadlifting. Even with this defect, more often than not I have to point it out to someone for them to notice.

The bottom line is your own mental picture of yourself is not necessarily what others see. Just like why your voice sounds funny when you hear it on a tape recorder versus when you are speaking. Without the sound resonating in your skull when you speak, the taped version of your voice will always sound different. My advice is to just keep training and focus on a balanced workout routine that addresses all weak points. The fact that your strength is even confirms you are developing symmetrically.

Check out this video my man!

I have watched this video and feel like this does not apply to me, because I am very strict with form when it comes to exercises and will not let my ego get the best of me though I used to be like this before finding Scott on YouTube. After that I have the form down, and if I dont because of the weight, I lower it to finish my set with proper form. This being said, my mind-muscle connection is "so-so". I can do the pec-dance and flex my right and left lats at command because i've worked with this, but when I'm in the gym, even if I am training with dumbells, the burn is stronger in my right arms. I'm not really sure what I'm supposed to do about this.

Hm, I see. So what you're saying is that I should keep doing what I'm doing (with proper form of course) and my body will make both sides, dominant and non-dominant more symmetrical? Its just sad that when I flex with my right and my left that theres such a big difference appearance wise. I guess its my ego speaking because the strenght is equal on both sides but I want it to be visible aswell. If you have been training for 32 years and still convinced that even you have a slight muscle imbalance then I guess its only natural that I should be having them too. You have some very good points like with the tape recording with my voice in it, it makes everything make sense. I just thought to myself that if this continues and people start commenting on it it'll be really awkard for me to be walking around in a t-shirt during spring, lol.

I would not stress into it too much. If you are right side dominant like me and I take it from your post you are then your left side I believe will always be unbalanced to a point. I do more with my right arm and right leg than the left, my right bicep looks bigger than my left still. Could be some in your head too but as I've trained more and more using dumbells when possible I have filled myself out to even up with the other side but it has taken some time and my right bicep is still not there. Sometimes when I do db bench and even arm curls my left side seems stonger than the right and my right side burns a little quicker into the exercise. Keep the weight even especially if you do excersises alternating sides and it will catch up. If it is a real extreme difference do a little extra work on the side that needs it but don't make it too much of a habit or things may flip and you'll be in the same boat. Like I said don't stress too much about it and give things time to catch up.

Danny,

Just keep doing what you are doing. It will take more than a year as transforming your physique and bodybuilding is a marathon not a sprint. Regardless of how you think you look, I can assure you that you will look better than the majority of people who don't lift :-)
