I started deadlifting about 3 months ago. In that time I started on 80 Kg, my bodyweight is 72 Kg. I jumped about 10 Kg every week and 127 Kg 8 reps is my new workout weight. I just want to know if it is wise if I take that big jump every week.

My goal is 200Kg 4 reps , I managed 1 allready.

Does a 1 rep max count or is it better to stick with reps?

Hey Bart!

That is totally fine.  You are supposed to get stronger and as long as you can maintain proper form during your reps you are ok.

If you are trying to continue to get stronger, try doing either a 5 X 5 program or a 5 - 3 - 1.

5 X 5 is FIVE SETS by FIVE REPS

5 - 3 - 1 is

Set 1: 5 reps

Set 2: 3 reps

Set 3: 1 rep

Hope this helps!

Just go easy on them, and maybe check your form by recording it or using mirrors.

yeah bro, as long as you are maintaing proper form and dont feel any aches or pains in the lower back then continue adding weight. I highly recommend the 5X5 method that Scott was talking about. You simply perform 5 sets of 5 reps with the same weight. You want those last couple sets to be tough. I was the same way when I started dead lifts. I was increasing the weight at least 5-10 lbs per week. Its perfectly fine. :)

Bart,

That is fantastic progress!   As long as your form is solid and your back doesn't hurt after each session, keep raising the weight.  I do dead lifts once a month and I try to push a little more each time.  Scott's routine works - he is only 175lbs or so and dead lifts over 500 lbs.  That is some killer strength!

When deadlifting hurts my back I just lower the weights for a week or so

This used to happen to me all the time. Once I got into some amateur powerlifting, I found out I was doing deadlifts all wrong. If you're hurting your back on deadlifts, chances are you're rounding your lower back when you're pulling the bar upwards. If the bar is too far out in front of you, this tends to happen too. Try having the bar placed just in front of your shins. When you start, pretend like you're at the bottom of a deep squat. When you pull up, imagine that you're pushing against the floor to put more emphasis on leg drive rather than making deadlifts an all lower back movement.

Hope this helped :)

Thx for all the info guys . I also looked at scotts vedeos on deadlift and seems i was completely wrong in form and how i ataacked the lift .

Just for interest sake , when i hurt my back 2 weeks ago i was lifting 100kg.

On friday i did my first set of 12 onn 100kg , then realised i had more , and did my remaining 3 sets of 10 10 8 on 130 kg's .

I litterally crawled out of my gym from exaustion , but my back was absolutely fine,

Thank You very much .

now if my damn forearms would just stop hurting
