    Favorite Pre-Workout and Why?

    April 18, 2015, 7:39 am

Hey guys, this is Dave from the Pump Savages™. I want to start off by saying thanks for taking the time to view my post. My all time favorite pre-workout has to be the first jack3d that came out back in 2010. That was back when I first got serious into lifting, I would take jack3d and it would feel like there was bugs crawling all over my body. I would walk into the gym, and get a crazy pump! It is something ill never forget, because that was my first ever pre-workout that I took. So, nation. Whats your all time favorite pre-workout and why?!

    David,

I stay natural - a couple cups of green tea and some cocounut oil on some chicken breast. I also juice a whole bunch of vegetables like carrots, celery, cucumber, tomatoe, etc as my pre-workout drink. You need to be careful with these designer pre-workouts with exotic or market catching names. The FDA has found many use amphetamines and other illegal or banned substances. Stick with reliable brands like BSN and Optimum Nutrition.

The feelings you described after taking Jack3D is exactly what amphetamines do. A pre-workout should not do this and while you may have had a good pump you are getting it thru artificial means. Look at the ingredients list. CNS Contractile Stimulant System is the "legal" way to hide amphetamines as the FDA does not regulate supplements. This is bad shit and I would not use it anymore. This stuff has already been banned in the UK:

GAT NITRAFLEX. I am one to partially believe that pre-workouts are a mind game. NITRAFLEX is in my head and gets me going more than anything else I have tried. There is not much I havent tried... From my experience, pre-work is all about preference. I do not believe there is a superior pre-workout. I do believe there is a pre-workout that is the best for your individual body. In my case, it is NITRAFLEX. It is hyperemia and testosterone booster. Makes me focused, full of energy (with a preworkout snack), and gets me feeling tingly. I also think my pumps are more intense and prolonged when on NITRAFLEX. Not trying to sell this product, I could care less if you buy it. It just works well for me.

Again, the ingredients list on this thing is right out of a chemistry text book. There is no guarantee these chemicals are safe or as stated on the label. Not worth using in my opinion.

a glas of water with some creatine ^^ and that's it.

I don't believe in pre workouts, (agreeing with John on that) and i have enough endurance on my own.

Don't need no overload of coffeine making me dizzy in my head or anything of that kind to feel buzzed enough for the gym =)

NO optimizers while somewhat safer ingredients-wise may still be a waste of money for some. When you get a MuscleGenes genetic profile, it tells you how well your body is at creating NO and how well you get blood to working muscles. For people like me who genetically do this very well already, an NO supplement is a total waste of time.

I would even contend that for those who may not be genetically optimized for blood flow the body adapts to training and part of this adaptation is increased efficiency in both NO production and vaso-dilation abilities. As such, I still think NO supplements are a waste of money in my opinion.

Isnt Jack3d the one with the now banned supper dangerous ingredients?

But personally I dont use Pre-workouts much...not saying that they dont work....I think if anything they may work too well. Once people start using them, they get hooked and then working out without them isnt the same, they build an immunity and have to take more or stronger supps. I dont think that a lot of them are a very healthy way to treat your body.

Saying that small rant, I have tried a few different ones so I could at least have a slightly informed opinion on them, including NO Shotgun and a cpl others I dont remember. Generally I found most of them just give me a massive headache and I dont feel well at all when its in my system. The only pre-workout I have used that I can stand and use everynow and again is PowderBurn by RivalUS. Its as healthy as I suppose pre-workous can get...gives me energy, and no crash or headache etc. Ive given it to others that are addicted to the big pre-workout brands and they always seem to like it as there is no crash and is pretty sustained even energy.

    Matt,

I looked at the label of PowderBurn. Hedera Helix Leaf and Tiger Nut Powder are perfect examples of what Jackd3D did - use exotice names for banned amphetamine-like substances. Just because they put "military grade approved" (which is total bullshit as the U.S. and Canadian militaries do not approve, distribute, or use pre-workouts for servicemen) and the fact that "Dr Darren Burke PhD" recommends 1 scoop" is total marketing hype to make the product "look" legit.

I Googled Dr Darren Burke and while he seems respectable on the surface - written 100 peer-reviewed studies, surrounded by top athletes, etc - so were the people who helped Lance Armstrong dope and the head of the BALCO labs that made designer steroids for Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguex, Jason Giambi, and a host of other pro athletes. There are no secret ingredients or short cuts to increasing energy. Other than caffeine, all the other supposed "natural" compounds either need to be taken in moderation (ginseng) or have an exotic name that produces more of a result than the actual product. What people forget is that if a banned chemical changes one aspect of its molecular structure, it is no longer a banned substance even if it produces the same results. It can claim it is not on any banned substance list. This is how the maker of Craze has been able to keep one step ahead of the law until someone dies or a drug test identifies metabolic analogs of banned substances as they are constantly updating the list and many quasi-legal substances still produce banned metabolites.

    Hi John,

I also just looked at the label. I dont see either of those two substances you listed(unless they go by another name on the label). There is an older version of Powderburn that may have that stuff in it but the PowderBurn 2.0(current product) doesnt list either on their label. Also only their old version was marketed as a "military grade"...yes I am aware that this does not mean it is endorced my the armed forces....its marketing, nothing more.

I still hold the opinion that most pre-workouts arent overly healthy for you, and yes I agree that a lot of companies mis represent their products....thats why in large I do not take them. One small container of pre-workout generally lasts me long enough that I throw it away before I use it all becasue its so old. I really only use it once every month or two.

It was just my thought that Jack3d was an exceptionally bad product that caused MAJOR health problems....even after it was found out...Jack3d although they stopped production they continued to sell the dangerous product at a discount rate to get rid of stock vs scrapping it.

But in large part, I like RivalUS, they are owned now by ON which is one of the best known and respected supplement companies. I started on RivalUs because it was started in my hometown, it had a local connection, and got great reviews, when I had questions or concerns about a product I heard directly from BURKE himself with answers/refunds/etc...not saying they are perfect, but I trust them a hell of a lot more than a majority of the products out there.

    Cheers...Matt

I never had pre workout.... unless creatine counts. Don't have money for pre workout Usually just drink coffee and green tea in the morning with breakfast and that will give me enough energy even if I workout in the afternoon.

I'd like to try this preworkout, but I don't have enough balls to.

    Matt,

Could be an old picture that came up on Google. I agree, ON is great and I use their supplement. As long as you are cautious with pre-workouts and don't take them at face value. you'll be fine :-)

So I have been taking my 1 scoot of whey with 8oz of water and 5g of creatine about 45 minutes before I start my workout, and then a cup of green tea and 1 tablespoon of coconut oil about 20 minutes before my workout. I was a little extra fatigued from work the other day and added a banana in my pre-workout regime and that seemed to boost me along the way. I was just wondering if adding the banana will take away from my body using the coconut oil as a direct energy source and not burn fat as much, or is the glucose more prone to being stored as an energy source as my body burns off the fat? Or will everything just work together in a sense if I'm burning enough calories?

I don't think having a banana is going to suddenly make you store fat. What will make you store fat is excess calories. So like you said, everything will pretty much work together if you're burning enough calories.

The reality is basically whatever food you eat before the gym is likely to be used to fuel your workout. It's the food during the rest of the day that either goes toward performing everyday functions, rebuilding muscle, or hanging around as fat.

Cup of strong black coffee and a half-serving of almonds! Works great for me and not all that added caffeine, which in the preworkout drinks is about 8-11xs more than a cup of coffee. Stick to natural ingredients!!!

Good, that's what I was thinking and just needed someone else to confirm that! :) I had been on the fence about trying a pre-workout, but the regime I've been doning has been working out just fine for me. I tried a pre-workout before and it made me feel like crap and actually hindered my workouts.

Yeah pre-workouts are more a personal preference than anything else. So if you felt like crap, it could be the brand, or it could just be the make-up of pre-workouts in general.

I kinda like the new formula NO Xplode, but I think that mixing the powder form is not quite as good as using premixed shakes. I use two scoops of the new formula where the slightly less potent version of the energy mix does the same job. Then it comes down to cost I suppose. Muscle Pharm Assault isn't bad, but it doesn't give me the same pump. Xtreme Shock NO premixed is solid. It doesn't have the amphetamine jitters that some of the shady sups have like formula 1......stay away from it. That stuff will kill you. These three give you similar niacin boosts and have a pump effect. Of the three, the premixes seem to be more effective.

I think the nitrogen aspect was brought up by John. Some people absorb more nitrogen just from breathing than others, and there are ways to stimulate higher levels. That nitrogen level helps to pack more blood into the muscle hence the pump. Ever wonder where the science behind this technology comes from? It'll probably make you laugh when you realize it....
