Have You Heard Of The New Epidemic?

That's right, it's fact, many health professionals are actually calling sitting the new smoking! I'm not sure if it's quite as dramatic as that, but it's definitely causing plenty of problems for people and their health. And in today, I want to specifically talk about a few key tips to save our backs from long term pain from too much sitting. I know a lot of you reading this will have had, or are currently having, back pain in your life, so this is something you must know to protect your back!

Why Is My Back Sore In The First Place?

When you go to sleep at night, the disks in your spine fill up with fluid that helps cushion and protect the spine from impact (think of these disks as shock absorbers). As the day goes on, those discs lose fluid, and this can put more stress on your back, causing lower back pain.

Early in the morning, these disks are much more vulnerable to fluid loss. That's why it's key for you that if you work out in the morning, you limit lower back flexion exercises (for example, crunches). This will release the fluid from your disks, leaving your back unprotected for the rest of the day.

Have you ever noticed that sometimes you just wake up with back pain? Sometimes, that's because you are sleeping in flexion. Your disks lost fluid before you even woke up, and that is setting you up for a LONG and painful day.

What Can I Do To Remedy My Back Pain?

The second tip I've got for you is an exercise you can do if you're stuck sitting in one spot for a long time (you can see this in the photos below).

Every 20 - 30 minutes, hop out of your chair, stick your arms straight up into the air, and then reach back for five seconds. Repeat this for five reps, trying to go a little bit farther back as you perform each rep. Never go so far that it is painful or uncomfortable.

How Long Will It Take For My Back Pain To Go Away?

If you have back pain, I'd recommend trying this for seven days, and then see if it's helped you out at all. If these don't help you, you might want to go and get checked out by a doctor. I've used these two things with multiple ladies in my gym who train, and within seven days they said they felt a world of a difference.

Is There Anything Else I Should Know?

For those of you looking for more info on this, I picked these tips up from an injury specialist named Rick Kiselj. I went through his program, and he goes over an entire workout that helps you improve your posture as far as your hip area is concerned, which is a HUGE issue for those of you who are sitting down all day. I found this extremely helpful in working with my own clients too.

I hope this article helps you out! Let me know in the comments if you have any questions!
