Take Control, Stop The Blame

Hey everyone, my name is Ben. I have lost over 100lbs, and gained a substantial amount of muscle over the past two and a half years. For a long time while growing up I used to think I was genetically tied to being obese forever. However, there comes a point when we have to stop blaming life, the situations we are put in, and our genetics, and start realizing that maybe the problem is our own bad habits.

Why We Shouldn't Focus On Genetics

Genetics in the beginning has nothing to do with you being able to lose weight. For example, let’s take a look at two families...

Family A: Active parents, who lead by example. They keep fruits, and nutrient dense snacks in the house. Every day the parents bring their children to sports, go play outside, and teach them junk food is to be had in moderation. They stick to mostly water as drinks, and ensure proper nutrition.

Family B: Parents who were never taught anything about nutrition. They go to work, come home, drink a few beers because they had a hard day, and watch TV. They usually order out because they don't feel like cooking. They keep chips, candy, and soda on tap for whenever.

Obviously you know where I am going with this… The children of those parents will look, and feel, much different to one another. Health issues will reflect the decisions that were made. The genetics of the child from Family B had no influence or direct cause to their obesity. However, their lifestyle and lack of activity paired with poor food choices directly correlates to where that child will end up.

No More Excuses

Now let’s take someone that may have grown up in Family B, they are now 19 years old. They weigh 120lbs more than they should, and they say: “I’m just big boned” or “It’s just my genetics”. Instead of working towards fixing the problem, they just deal with it and continue with bad habits. SO MANY people also try to blame their hormones, but never go to the doctor to get them checked. The amount of people that truly have hormone issues that make weight loss near impossible is really pretty miniscule.

Genetics may very well play a factor down the line in terms of how much muscle you can potentially gain naturally, and what your body composition will look like. However, in the beginning when you are just looking to lose fat, all you need to do is get yourself in a caloric deficit, start lifting weights, and do it day after day, week after week, year after year and never give up! I guarantee that if you really want it bad enough, bad enough to drop the excuses and put in the time and effort, your genetics will play no factor in you trying to drop that fat!

Believe that you can do it, stop limiting your capabilities, and know that in time you will be where you want to be, have what you want to have, and more!

Very Inspiring Ben! awesome transformation!

I lost 35lbs and my wife lost 45lbs. Now when it come to genetics and gaining muscle that's where I have a bump in the road but I as long as I eat, drink, lift weight and rest, I should be alrightttttt! Awesome article dude!

Agreed. I feel like people who use genetics as an excuse just don't want to change bad enough.

It always nails down to the choices we make, and i hear a lot complaints and excuses of people and in the end you'll always find out there is no magical dark force making them obese, but it's all down to how they life and eat. (unless they have some desease of course). Great Vid! That burp though XD lol

hahaha ^_^ Thank you man! And you are right!

Great story. I remember being told by family and friends "You can't help it - you're just a big guy". Now that I'm down to where I am at present I realized that I wasn't a big guy - just a fat one. I'm not "there" yet. I'm not sure where "there" is. I just want to stay as fit and healthy as I can.

Exactly man! We decide who we are and where we end up!

Cool story Ben! I hear a lot of people blame their lack of progress on things like hormones, genetics, thyroid problems, etc. It's nice to see someone overcome the obstacles and get healthy!
