I've been having shoulder pain during certain exercises for a few months. I finally got an MRI and the doctor said it's something with a ligament and I need to let it rest and heel. He said to not work out for about 2-3 weeks (hopefully it won't be any longer than that).

As I've mentioned in other posts, I'm skinny overall (158lbs, 5'10) but have some belly fat. Since my goal is to build muscle, I've been trying to bulk up first, and then I figured I'd try to cut to get rid of the belly fat. However, since I have to take a break from working out for a few weeks, I thought I could take this time to at least do some cardio (which I haven't been doing) and try to lose some of that belly fat. If I do cardio (treadmill) twice a week, how long should each session be?

Honestly cardio just twice a week really isn't going to burn much body fat. If you want some legit results, I'd say at least 20 minutes, unless you do like 10 straight minuts of full sprint.

As always, the way to burn the fat is diet first. Good luck!

I'm 27, I'm male, I'm trying to maintain a healthy but nice physique. I weigh about 195, 6'0 I've got four large passions in my life! Sports! My Lord and Savior! P.E.! And last but not least..... My wife! HTH! I have other goals, just ask if you want to know! My handle is Big Boss, but you can just call me Allan. Finally, always remember, HTH!

@bigboss is right that diet will be key to dropping some fat, although you could see good results with cardio twice a week if it is HIIT. Aiming for 15-20 minutes would be great for HIIT, and 2-3 times a week with a deificit will help you lose fat.

I take it you can still train lower body, right? So you could do something like Lower body, abs, cardio repeat. That way you can at least keep some weight training going until you can hit upper body again.

Yea, maybe I will add some lower body and abs exercises, as long as they don't involve holding any weight or putting any sort of pressure on my shoulder. So anything like leg lifts, ab pulldowns, or wood choppers would be out. What kind of HIIT cardio would you suggest?

Well.. at least you can still do general crunches and deep crunches and things like that. I'd suggest biking or running HIIT cardio for you.. stay away from the rower with the shoulder injury. So if you were running, it might be something like 1 minute running fast, 1 minute jogging/walking, and repeat for 15-20 minutes.

Or it might be more like 30 seconds running fast, then 30-60 seconds jogging/walking. So you can do the same thing either running on the road, running on the treadmill, or biking, or on a bike at the gym.
