You need to be careful with how you define "normal" blood pressure. These guidelines are set by the Joint National Committee (JNC). We have had the JNC 6 guidelines from 1998, the JNC 7 guidelines from 2003, and the new JNC 8 guidelines from 2014.
JNC 7 was the one emphasizing that BP under 120/80 was actually Normal, 120/80 - 140/90 was Pre-Hypertensive, 140/90 and higher had Stages 1 and 2 of Hypertension. The new JNC 8 guidelines modify these guidelines. Normal BP is now 140/90 and lower. Hypertension is now 140/90 and higher. It also takes into account age because as you age your BP normally increases as the body's adaptation to aging blood vessels and organs. Getting treated for Hypertension using many of the most common drugs has been found to INCREASE stroke rate and death rate - especially in older people.
The pharmaceutical industry does its best to influence the JNC and the AMA as BP meds make a lot of money for them as they must be taken everyday for life. I would review this link before you start worrying about what your BP should be based on the old JNC 2003 guidelines. The new JNC 8 guidelines are more accurate now based on the data and research:
