Nation,

Scott is always asking me to post progress pics. The pics below were taken today and are after 1 year of intermittent fasting. It also is the result of a dedicated 3 year transformation where I quit drinking, eating all processed and junk food, and training with higher volume and intensity. Now that I am older, I can't get away with the same stuff eating and alcohol-wise while lifting as I could when I was in my 20's and 30's. Once you hit 40, the world changes for those serious about bodybuilding. While I am not in the same league as Scott and some others on the Board, I am at least 20 years older than them. This hopefully shows what can be done with proper nutrition and exercise regardless of age :-)

I started at 187Lbs and 18% bodyfat with a 34" waist. I am now at 162Lbs with a 30" waist and 9.5% bodyfat. I am guessing my bodyfat as most online calculators have me at 8% based on my waist and neck measurements. They are usually off by 1-2%. I am assuming I am at least 10% but not lower than 9% so I split the difference to 9.5%. This is based on my years seeing lean people as well as my vascularity level - both at rest and when working out - and being able to see my abs, serratus muscles, and obliques:

Great Job John! I would definitely say you are in the 10% bf range!! You are even more defined!

Yes, I love my beer and ice cream and really have to make an effort to minimize those endulges. Cutting down to almost elementing these two things has allowed me to slim down to about 10% bf. In my mid-30s I really started seeing the bf go up! I didn't start working out till the last 4-5 yrs. I feel better than when I was in my 20s. I just turned 48 and continuing to lose the bf and making those lean gains.

Congrats and continued success.

I agree with Scott that posting progress pics confirms that you live by what you preach!

John

You have to open them in paint and RESAVE them. When you upload from a phone they will get messed up sometimes.

Even if you transfer files from your phone to your computer and then upload, you can still have this problem and need to open the file and resave to fix :)

and yes! I think it is accurate for sure!

Damn John, you are looking amazing at 51, keep up the good work!

Thanks Jim. In reality it is 90% diet and 10% training. This is why you may see I am a bit of a "nutrition Nazi" on this site when it comes to people asking about cheat meals and If-it-fits-your-macros (IIFYM) type nutrition plans. They "work" to a degree up to age 35-40 but nothing is a substitute for 100% clean nutrition 100% of the time at all ages :-)

That is very good John, especially your obliques

Thanks Robert. Ironically I don't train my obliques but rather do all exercises without a lifting belt (squats, deadlifts, overhead presses, etc) as well as do weighted and body weight ab exercises in every workout (4 days/week). 101 reps total each workout for abs seems to do the trick :-)

Aaaaaahhhhh. I see Grasshopper. OK, I will remember that in the future.

If you and others concur on the bodyfat level, then I think that is accurate enough for me :-)
