Hey guys everytime i watch a video about muscle gain on youtube people always say you need to build stength to build muscle. Im asking this because even though i don't go my heaviest i still get a very good workout and have an amazing pump sometimes.

When you do a workout, you're pushing/pulling an amount of weight over time...this is called Power (Power is Work divided by time, but to save time, work is going to be replaced with weight lifted to give a general idea). That being said, when you lift a heavier weight than normal in the same amount of time, you're using more power in the muscles, and this makes your muscles grow to adapt to the new weight. Another method to increase power is to shorten the time, which can be done by reducing rest periods (going below 30 seconds is NOT recommended), or increasing weight, or a little of both. The more power you put in, the more your muscles have to adapt (BUT as with all things, there is an extreme on how far you can go for the time being).

This is a very scientific method, so the best way to simplify it is with the term "progressive overload". Essencially, progressive overload is the body doing more than it could the last time. This can be done, like I said before, by either reducing rest time, increasing weight, OR you can also add more reps and sets.

Some people prefer strength training as a method of building muscle. I do a hybrid where I superset a strength movement with a lighter weighted movement, but with better form, as typical routines don't work for me.

If you prefer using lighter weight and sticking to clean form....as long as it works, USE IT! Just know there are other ways to train if you ever need to mix things up!

Also, the pump is usually when your muscles become engorged with blood, it doesn't necessarily mean you tore the muscles down completely, it's just the body transporting red blood cells to the area to feed it oxygen. Bodybuilders right before they go up on stage will use lighter weights and push ups to get a pump so their muscles look bigger, and they don't tear the muscle down. DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) is the indicator you're looking for...you usually feel it 24 to 48 hours after the workout. If you're not experiencing DOMS, you didn't tear down the muscle tissue.

you shouldn't go your heaviest in general. Trying to go for 'max' is a thing you do every once in a while. (except for power lifters for which only the one rep max counts)
You should normally use about 60-75% of what your max is. For your exercises. So it's hard to say if it's a good or bad sign :) Go on, do the changes a few weeks and see how the muscles react. That is the best method to figure if it's a good sign.

Soreness does not always need to be a sign of a 'good' workout, it can also be good without much DOMS / soreness.
Little tip on the side, by reading this it sounded like you did your chest 2 days in a row? don't do that. leave about 48 hours minimum between the musclegroups. (Abs are a bit different from that though, they can be trained more often and are inderectly involved in most exercises anyways)

Cheers!

You don't need to strength train to build muscle. However to build good amounts of strenghth you want to keep lifting heavier. Even with light weight and high reps you will get stronger it will just take longer than lifting heavier and heavier each week. Building muscle is progressive overload which stated above doesn't have to be adding weight each week but could be less rest time, more reps ect. As far as not being as sore DOMS which is what you would experience does not define wether you had a good workout or not. DOMS happens when you train your body out of its comfort zone and has to do with muscle tear and inflamation but as the body adapts you will be less and less sore until you make a big change in your routine and you may experience serious DOMS again. Too much DOMS for a long period of time however may mean you did way too much or are not doing something enough.

I have been training coming up on 6 years and have made some great gainz. I've done a lot of trial and error on myself as well as learned from others and through research online. I've come along way in strength and size since I've started. I will continue to learn and make myself better each day. That's normal @Mortalblood. Sometimes your muscles will hurt for like 3-4 days after a workout - not a bad thing at all, just means it was intense!

Now, if they were sore a week after you last trained them, it would be time to take a rest day on that muscle group until you feel it is back to normal. Check out this video if you haven't already for more info:

In response to your original question about strength, everyone has given you great advice - you don't NEED strength gains to make muscle gains, but they can potentially help because you are putting them muscle under more strain than it might be used to, which may lead to growth.

But there are plenty of other ways to progressively overload muscles to make them grow - check this out!

Bojan,

The bottom line is muscular growth and increased strength are not always linearly linked. Training for size is different than training for strength. Muscular hypertrophy needs volume and intensity not specifically more weight. Progressive overload can be achieved many ways and adding more weight is just one of them. This is why many body builders are big but not stronger than power lifters and many powerlifters are very strong but not very big.

Strength training, however, requires the consistent focus on increasing the weight. The rep ranges are smaller and the rest periods higher to facilitate the body's ability to adapt and get stronger.

Bojan,

It is not a stupid question :-)

Volume in bodybuilding means increasing the amount of sets and reps you do for a muscle. Most people do 3 sets of 10 reps for biceps, for instance. High volume would be 5-6 sets of ten reps or 4 supersets of 10 reps each where each superset consists of 2 different bicep exercises and each superser is 20 reps total. Muscle respond to this by growing bigger, stronger, and more efficient using energy.
