I already know the scientific and biological reasons as to why it is recommended that you do not exceed 45 minutes of working out. But I am curious about what you have to say on the topic. This thread explains it more detailed https://muscularstrength.com/forums.php?pageAction=POSTS&subForumID=32&threadID=2137. I personally use a 30-45 minute program, where I do 5 workouts a week.

What do you think ? Is 45 minutes the limit ? What are you using right now ?

The video certainly makes you think about the way you spend your time in the gym!!!

The number of guys you see on phones and chatting is quite high in the gym.

I am usually in between 45 - 60 mins, usually depending on what I am training and how busy the gym is. I am sure I could reduce this down if I reduced rest periods between sets.

Motivated the SHF way.... Train mean, eat clean = results!!! BOOM!! #HTH... Twitter @ian_higson

William,

I do 60 minutes flat. As you know, I do very intense full body workouts and average around 450-500 total reps each workout across 4 muscle groups plus abs. I bought the Adidas Fit Smart watch Scott did a review on and the stats it gathered shows I burn 1000 calories in my Push/Pull workouts and 300 calories in my 30 minutes of cardio for a total of 1300 calories per workout. At 4 workouts per week, I am burning 5200 total calories. I would not be able to do any more than this so 60 minutes is more than enough :-)

Yeah I would guess that it is normal to spend that amount in the gym. And yeah I also thought a lot about what I was doing in the gym after watching the video.

I don't think 45 minutes should be a limit, but you can definitely have a killer workout in 45 minutes!

For me, it just depends on what I am training. On average I am there for about 60-90 minutes, but today for example was only about 45-50 minutes.

I am interested in one of those Adidas watches too @jmboiardi!

@William_Steinset

I agree with John and Joe on this subject once more.

First off, i never chat on the phone, i only use it as timer or switch to a different song, i have my workoutplan in my head so i don't need to scroll endlessly through some workout application before doing the next exercise.. and yet, just like john i spend a much longer time.

I do things at my pace, and that doesn't mean that i go through my exercises in slow motion. But as i train my half body each 2 times a week, (2 times upper and 2 times lower), this can take some time. Especially when you have to combine different kinds of exercise types like compound exercises and isolation exercises at the same days. I mostly finish off one bodypart, with all its exercises (some of those supersetted), and then go on to the next one.

Then i need a bit of time to stretch i.e. for the compound exercises, as i personally believe doing all stretches and warmups in the beginning isn't helpfull, the effect wears off within a few minutes again, especially when you did exercises for a different bodypart for half an hour.

On top of that i personally like to try new things too (especially working on callistenic moves), and keep dropping those in at points where similar bodyparts have been worked already and are warmed up. Trying new things can be a bit time intense, as you often just get to do one rep, and then have to rest quite a moment as your body is quite uncomfortable with what just happened.. hehe.

and my leg days... lower back, upper back, legs and bicpes.. >> those can take me quite a while lol. Especially start of the week where i do the heavy compound exercises.

Given the fact i work mostly on my computer all day, and have appropriate sleep, i have enough power to do such lengthy workouts.

I think we all differ in that matter. Goals, physical capability, etc.
And it's important to find the "shortest" version for us.

I personally love being in the gym.. i could spend 4 hours there if you let me ^^ joke aside.. i personally go home when all exercises are done, or when i feel my energy is spend. =)

Yeah I get what you are saying. You essentially go home when you feel that you are done, or when you are done.

Man, I would like to join in one of those workouts!

Lately I've been focussing more on strength of my compound lifts. For me, this results in a longer training because of rest times. I started to miss the intensity of supersets and short rest periods so i am switch back to a more bodybuilding like split again.

Also I train with my brother, sometimes this helps by pushing eachother. But this also leads to longer training times. When I train alone, my workouts last for just over an hour.
