In 2005 Dr Cliff Arnall, formerly of Cardiff University, came up with a light-hearted formula for predicting the gloomiest day of the year based on factors including weather, debts, time since Christmas and motivation and came back with the calculation that the third Monday in January was that day. This was based on the fact that by that date the bills from Christmas would start to arrive on people's doorsteps. However, this year he believes that today (which is the third Monday in January) could be even bluer than usual, as he has identified the deaths of George Michael and Carrie Fisher during Christmas and the inauguration of President Trump on Friday.

Now, personally, I do not subscribe to this theory. Indeed, at the moment I am feeling in a very chipper mood as I will be doing a shopping trip today and paying some money into my bank account, buiying a new coat, starting on my 187 mile election campaign walks and, assuming that the current poltiical situation in Northern Ireland does not change by 1700 GMT this afternoon, will be able to start work on analysis of the 2017 Northern Ireland Assembly Elections.

Another person who believes that today's blueness can be avoided is the former host of the television gameshow "Countdown" (based on the French gameshow "Des chiffres et des lettres" (Letters and Numbers)) Carol Vorderman who is currently doing a tour of the breakfast programmes in the United Kingdom with her formula to beat today's supposed blueness: Sunshine (ideally a minimum of eight hours a day) + Laughter (enough to make you cry) + Social (getting together with friends and family) + Comfort (making sure that your home is comfortable) + Kindness (to others) + Encouragment (of yourself and others) - Stress (by taking things easy) - Cost (by getting the things that you need for as cheap as you can) = Happiness.

So therefore I would like to ask if members agree with that formula or whether they agree, like me, that there is nothing really to feel despondent about today. I should point out that on some occasions, Blue Monday can be a very good thing (after all it gave New Order a top ten hit in eleven countries around the world in 1983)

Which in itself was remixed by the band in 1988, and then remixed by Kylie Minogue in 2002 proving that you can make a wonderful out of a "Blue Monday"
